Very disappointing experience – definitely not what we expected from a 4-star resort.
We chose Golden Mare Resort for our honeymoon, expecting a relaxing and memorable stay. Unfortunately, the reality was very different, and many of the issues we experienced ended up ruining what was supposed to be a very special trip for us.
The room: Our room was in poor condition and clearly needed maintenance. Some of the doors and hardware were broken or had been taken out of service. There were holes in the walls, and the bathroom was in poor and neglected condition. The bed had an old spring mattress that was far below the standard we would expect from a 4-star resort. Storage space was extremely limited, making it practically impossible to properly unpack our suitcases.
Air conditioning: The air-conditioning unit was incredibly loud, and the outdoor unit blew hot air directly onto the balcony. This made it very unpleasant to use the balcony while the AC was running.
All-inclusive: The drinks were extremely poor quality and tasted like cheap substitutes. We were also very surprised that drinking water was not readily available as part of the all-inclusive service. For an all-inclusive resort, especially in the heat of Corfu, we find this completely unacceptable.
Pool and outdoor areas: The pool area was dirty and poorly maintained. There was visible dirt and algae, and some of the umbrellas were broken. This is simply not the level of cleanliness and maintenance we expected from a 4-star resort.
Food: The food selection was quite limited, some dishes were tough, and dinner was often served lukewarm rather than hot. For an all-inclusive resort, the quality and temperature of the food should be one of the basics.
Common areas: There was no adequate air conditioning in the lobby/reception or restaurant. During our stay, with the high temperatures in Corfu, this made the common areas extremely uncomfortable.
What makes this especially disappointing is that this was our honeymoon. We expected to relax, enjoy Corfu and make wonderful memories together. Instead, we spent far too much time dealing with the condition of our room, broken equipment, the heat in the common areas, poor food and the overall lack of maintenance.
The location and the views are definitely the best things about this resort. Unfortunately, they cannot make up for the condition of the rooms, cleanliness, maintenance and the quality of the services.
In our opinion, this hotel does not come close to the standard we would expect from a 4-star resort. We genuinely regret choosing Golden Mare Resort for our honeymoon.
Amazing hotel in a terrible location.
Location: not great, you’re stuck in a very small village with only a few bars/restaurants within walking distance. There are buses to Corfu Town and Kassiopi but they are limited (every 2hrs) and the last bus is at 8.30, miss that and you’re paying £90 for a taxi back from Corfu or Kassiopi. The hotel is on a steep hill so it’s not great for anyone with mobility issues.
Food: Not the best, most dishes are cold as they are left out longer than they should be before the restaurant opens. Extremely repetitive, lunch and dinner is the same dishes daily with the occasional change. French fries were the only consistent hot and tasty meal option. We ate out daily. There’s no air con anywhere in the restaurant so you either sweat like hell or you eat outside in the heat and get attacked by the wasps and annoyed by the local cats.
Rooms: Air conditioning worked a treat and that’s the only positive. No temperature adjustment on the shower, there was hot n cold taps but they done nothing. The shower screen was too narrow so the whole bathroom including the toilet was soaked with water with nowhere for it to drain. Bathroom door hinges and bathroom taps were heavy with limescale with mould on the walls. Towels were hit n miss, they took the dirty towels n replaced them with only 1 towel or they didn’t replace them at all. The main ceiling light was broken and the safe instructions were in Greek with no English. Both were reported to reception several times but nothing done.
General Hotel:
Drinks are a limited choice and you have to pay to use the rooftop bar and after 11.30pm. No aircon in communal areas apart from the luggage room, no idea why they choose to cool your luggage but not you! No pathways were not lit so getting up the steps to the room at night was quite scary as some steps were broken. There’s only 1 toilet in the communal areas, the week spent there 1 cubicle in the ladies was out of order leaving only 1 toilet for the whole hotel. For 3 days there was no toilet paper and the staff simply put paper hand towels in its place. No soap was there either.
The place is poorly maintained with broken steps, large gaps round manholes, broken areas by the pool, vents on the pool floor were broken and sharp. The list of bad points seems endless.
Considering the star rating this hotel has I think it needs to be down graded. Spent a lot of money for a week and spent almost the same amount eating out.
Me and my partner stayed here for 7 nights in May 2026. On arrival, the hotel looked lovely and modern. Hotel and rooms: When we got to our room, unfortunately it was 2 twin beds we had to push together which is quite uncomfortable for a couple to sleep on. (We did book a deluxe double room). We made the most of it however, when we were walking past other rooms on the same floor when housekeeping was attending to them, they all had double/large double beds? We did wonder if this was just the hotel making assumptions we were friends due to being a same sex couple? The room was clean and looked tidy. However, the bathroom was very very dirty. The drains smelt very bad, there was dead bugs in the toilet and the shower was coated in thick limescale. I went and asked if the bathroom could be cleaned twice, and was told they would do this however it never happened. Facilities: There is 1 bar in the hotel which doubles as the pool bar and lobby bar. The drinks were good for all inclusive cocktails. There is a rooftop bar however there is an added fee so we decided against it. The food hall was an ok size for the hotel and we never had a problem getting a seat. There is a gym onsight however didn’t visit this. Went for a massage in the spa which was lovely. The gym and spa are both down in the basement and no reception staff there so it was a bit challenging to know where to go. The pool is a good size however was in good need of a clean. There was always dead bugs floating in the pool. The sunloungers had comfortable mattresses on them, however some were broken which resulted in one falling on my arm. Food: The food was quite repetitive each night, and there was limited times when you could have a meal. They had breakfast and late breakfast and then lunch and then there was a gap until 7pm meal time. Although I appreciate this is Europe all inclusive, it would’ve been a nice touch to be able to have light snacks such as crisps, nuts or ice cream available behind the bar for the afternoon. Staff: The staff made the holiday, the dining and bar staff were top tier and made it worthwhile. Stavroula is amazing as well as Michael and another male bar staff who we didn’t get his name but he was always smiling and joking. Cleanliness: As stated before the bathroom in our room was dirty. We had problems with housekeeping throughout. Everyday we put the “make up room” sign on the door, and upon returning late morning it was off and not cleaned, we then put it back on again 2 more times before it was finally cleaned later afternoon. This happened every day of our visit bar 1. A few times we weren’t given clean towels despite leaving dirty towels on the floor of the bathroom to be collected. Location: The view is absolutely stunning. We had a pool view which was great. The view from the pool of the mountain was also beautiful. The hotel is located up a very steep hill so would not be suitable for those with mobility issues. We walked down the road a few nights for food and drink however the road has no pavement and is challenging to walk down. We got a taxi into the centre which didn’t take too long. Other: The WiFi is good and fast. There was no music around the pool which could’ve been a good addition. Overall
Stavroula the is extremely kind and helpful 👏
