- Poppies Samui

This Thai-style hotel is very nicely located on a secluded side of the south end of Chaweng beach. This beach resort offers its guests the best sandy beach of the Gulf of Siam. The town centre is approximately a 5-minute walk from the premises, where a variety of bars, restaurants and night clubs can be found. Koh Samui Airport is 7 km away.
Poppies is the very first hotel on Samui to be going green in terms of Plastic Bottles. We will provide each guest with a water bottle made from stainless steel and logo with Poppies and Samui. This water bottle may be filled up at Poppies resort and more than a dozen other cafes and shops on Samui for no charge. There is a one time charge for the bottle of 220 baht. The bottle may be taken home by the guest as a souvenir.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
The atmosphere in the hotel was so serene, the rooms were clean, staff both cleaning, restaurant, and reception were so friendly and accommodating. The beach was so beautiful, we saw several really friendly dogs walking early in the morning, definitely adds to the positive experience. The food was so delicious. We got Thai oil massage, and the masseuse's hands were so soft I felt so relaxed that I fell asleep. There are so many trees that the noise from the road or other cottages doesn't even travel far. And there is a koi pond that surely adds to the zen calmness.
Of the four times we’ve visited Koh Samui our stay at Anavana made this trip the best one. The bustling street outside is in sharp contrast to the serenity and peacefulness of this hotel. We were warmly welcomed by Miaow before being led through beautifully manicured gardens, little bridges, enormous koi and singing birds. Sounds magical? It is! The cottages are very comfortable and private and the beach in front is a long stretch of clean, white sand! Staff are incredible and Lek, Am and all the restaurant, bar, housecleaning and garden staff are friendly and very professional as is Dollar in the spa room. While there is some evening entertainment the charm of Anavana and its staff are what make this hotel extraordinary. Outside the hotel there are lots little restaurants, coffee shops, 7-11s and a great little juice bar offering all combinations of fresh fruit drinks and smoothie bowls. Our next trip to Koh Samui will definitely be at Anavana.
Overall, the hotel in Koh Samui is quite good, but not excellent.
Pros:
The beach is very nice and clean. There are lots of sunbeds, and there are always free spots. The location in Chaweng is good — everything is nearby. The bungalows are decent enough and have good soundproofing.
Cons:
The bungalows look a bit worn out. The bathrooms are in serious need of renovation. The breakfast is very poor; there was basically nothing to eat. the very poor service is at every stage, from the reception to the restaurant. A few examples:
On the first day, we arrived around 16:00–16:30 and went straight to the beach. We had to persuade the staff to give us at least a couple of towels because, in their opinion, it was already too late and we’d be better off coming back the next day. We stayed for 14 days with a 6‑year‑old child. Every day we ordered something for the child for lunch, and only three days before departure did I find the kids’ menu myself at the front desk. In a week and a half, no one ever offered it to me! When checking out, I came in the evening to pay the bilsl. They asked what time I was leaving the next day. I said around 6:30 a.m. On the day of departure, I came to the reception at 6:15, the taxi was already waiting for me. Based on my experience, check‑out usually takes 1–2 minutes. But I had to wait 15 minutes because the housekeeper wasn’t there (or was still asleep) and they couldn’t find him. When I complained about why I had to wait so long for no clear reason, they replied: “Well, you said you’d be leaving at 6:30, so just wait.” This is the first time in all my years of travelling that I’ve encountered such nonsense. All in all, the hotel is probably quite good for Koh Samui, and the beach is especially nice. But I’m not sure I’d want to stay here again.
From the moment you step into Anavana the experience is fantastic. The staff are friendly, helpful and an absolute delight. The gardens and cottages are so well maintained, refreshing and therapeutic. The bar and restaurant are perfectly located seaside with beautiful cocktails and food. Staff are on another level! We have already booked again for next year. Every visit new friendships across the globe are made. Would highly recommend.
We had a lovely family meal with sound of the waves crashing right next to us. The food was delicious and they made a special effort to accommodate our children.
