- Mandapa A Ritz Carlton Reserve

As a resort surrounded by the Ayung River in Ubud, a district known for its natural beauty, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve captures both the magic of Bali and the serenity of seclusion. The charm of this hotel lies not only in its spiritual and cultural richness, but in the joy of simply letting go. Here, surrounded by verdant rice paddies and ancient temples, guests will find joy in escaping daily distractions while turning to more relaxing endeavours, whether practicing yoga in a peaceful pavilion, biking through nearby villages, experiencing the local Balinese cuisine, or surrendering to pure bliss at the hands of an experienced spa therapist.
We spent five nights at Mandapa in late August/early September and couldn’t get enough of this place.
We stayed in a Riverfront Pool Villa, which I would highly recommend. The setting right along the Ayung River is incredible, and having our own pool and so much private outdoor space made it very easy to spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing. It’s definitely one of the villa categories worth considering if you’re coming all the way to Ubud.
Over five days we ate at all of the restaurants and also did one of the Dining Beyond experiences. The food was fantastic across the board. We never had a meal that felt like the “lesser” option, and the Dining Beyond experience was especially memorable.
We also took full advantage of the spa and wellness side of Mandapa. We had 90-minute massages, spent a lot of time using the spa facilities, and did probably half a dozen of the Disconnect to Reconnect classes during our stay. Normally on vacation we have every day packed with things to do, but Mandapa actually made us want to slow down and stay at the resort.
The service deserves its own mention. It was impeccable without ever feeling stiff or overdone. Everyone we encountered was warm, attentive and genuinely seemed to care that we were enjoying ourselves. That level of service was consistent throughout the entire five nights.
Mandapa is beautiful in photos, but they really don’t capture what it feels like being there. You’re surrounded by jungle, rice fields and the Ayung River, and despite being in Ubud, the property feels completely removed from everything. There’s a peacefulness to it that is hard to describe until you experience it.
After five nights, we still weren’t ready to leave. Mandapa ended up being one of those rare resorts where the property itself becomes one of the best parts of the trip rather than simply the place you’re staying.
We would return in a second.
It almost feels unfair to review Mandapa because no review—or collection of photographs—can fully do it justice. This place is completely bucket-list worthy and, without question, one of the finest resorts I have ever visited.
Kubu was one of the best meals I have ever had. Not one of the best meals in Bali—one of the best meals anywhere. Meeting Jerome, the Food & Beverage Manager, helped me understand why. There is simply no compromise in the quality of the ingredients, preparation or experience.
The service throughout Mandapa is almost shocking. It feels as though the entire staff shares one mind. At breakfast, if you nearly drop a napkin, a fresh one somehow appears before you even realize you need it. I still don’t understand how so many people learned our names, preferences and dietary restrictions so quickly, but they did. Nothing felt forced or rehearsed. They were simply paying attention at an extraordinary level.
The property itself is majestic. You could spend days walking around, exploring and noticing new details. Every part of it feels considered, from the grounds and facilities to the food and the gym, which I especially loved. They appear to have thought through every single detail.
What surprised me most was how different Mandapa feels during the day and at night. During the day, you are exploring the grounds and appreciating the design and intricate details. At night, the entire property changes. It becomes quiet, atmospheric and almost spiritual.
I would not stay fewer than three nights. Even then, I am not sure you can fully take it all in. I uploaded plenty of photos, but they only begin to capture what it feels like to be here.
Mandapa is the top resort I have ever experienced.
Absolutely — here it is corrected to he/him:
Our stay at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, was truly exceptional from beginning to end. The property itself is absolutely stunning, the setting, the views, the attention to detail, and the overall quality make it a very special place. The food was excellent throughout our stay, and every member of the staff made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for.
What made our experience especially memorable, however, was our butler, Tapsir. His service was extraordinary. He was incredibly attentive, warm, and thoughtful, and always seemed to anticipate what we might need before we even had to ask. Whenever we needed something, somehow he already had it arranged or ready for us. That level of personalized service is very rare and made us feel truly taken care of throughout our entire stay.
Tapsir went above and beyond to make our time at Mandapa unforgettable, and he is a wonderful example of the level of hospitality that makes this property so exceptional.
Mandapa exceeded our expectations in every way. Beautiful surroundings, spectacular views, excellent food, impeccable service, and an extraordinary team. We would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly special experience in Bali.
Thank you to the entire Mandapa team, and especially to Tapsir, for making our stay one we will always remember.
This resort has become our new favourite in the world. We regularly monitor and use the 50 best list to decide our next stay and we have to say they have it wrong on this one, it must be much higher.
We opted for a jungle pool villa for the privacy and we got it. The room was well equipped and comfortable. Every single member of the team we met delivered exceptional service.
The food and drink offering were delightful, that we barely felt the need to leave the resort (unusual for us).
The spa treatments were perfect (the treatment rooms proximity to the river does mean that rafting can cause noise during treatments (but it’s not that bad).
Our butler Darren was the right balance of present and giving us space to relax.
My biggest feedback, perhaps you let in too many day trippers taking pictures. At times in the bar it felt like i was on set of a photoshoot, which completely ruins the bar sunset experience.
We did have some minor service issues on the last evening but these didn’t impact and the team seemed to take it all on board.
We enjoyed it so much that we are planning to visit another Rita-Carlton Reserve.
Our stay at Mandapa was truly unforgettable. It was easily the best hotel experience and best service my family and I have ever received anywhere in the world.
The entire team at Mandapa deserves recognition. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, everyone treated us with an incredible level of warmth, kindness, and attention. The service never felt forced or scripted. Every person we encountered genuinely seemed to care about our family and about making our stay special.
A very special thank you goes to Tira, who took extraordinary care of us throughout our stay. She made us feel less like hotel guests and more like we were part of the Mandapa family. She was thoughtful, caring, attentive, and incredibly genuine. By the end of our stay, saying goodbye to her honestly felt like saying goodbye to a friend.
Mandapa itself is absolutely beautiful, but there are beautiful luxury hotels all over the world. What separates Mandapa is its people. The entire team created a feeling and an experience that is difficult to put into words.
We’ve stayed at many wonderful hotels, but Mandapa has set a new standard for us. My family will remember this experience for a very long time, and we already look forward to the day we can return.
Thank you to Tira and the entire Mandapa team for making us feel so genuinely welcomed, cared for, and at home. You didn’t just give us an amazing vacation—you gave our family memories we will always treasure.
