- Riu Tequila

The family-friendly Club Riu Tequila is excellently situated just south of the famous holiday resort of Playa del Carmen on the Mayan Riviera, close to the white sandy beach and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. It features a charming colonial style architecture, a lovely garden and pool landscape and 24-hour all inclusive, making it an ideal place for families with children.
We’ve just returned from a two-week stay at Tequila with a family group of 20, ranging in age from 8 months to 70 years old.
Before we travelled, I emailed the hotel to request adjoining rooms for my husband, son and me, along with rooms close to my niece’s family. They replied saying they would do their best, and on arrival they had managed to put us all next to each other in Block 23, which we really appreciated.
Our rooms were clean and comfortable. Block 23 is about a five-minute walk from the main reception, but we overlooked the trees so our balcony felt lovely and private. One thing to be aware of is the clear glass shower, which faces into the room. It wasn’t ideal if you like a bit of privacy, but we managed by propping my daughter’s lilo against the glass!
The buffet restaurant was excellent, with plenty of choice to suit most tastes and dietary requirements. The waiting staff were fantastic throughout our stay – always friendly and attentive. A special mention to the waiting staff especially Felix and Rangel for their excellent service.
The pool bar staff worked incredibly hard in the heat. They were understandably busy most of the time, but still remained friendly. Leydi, Juan and Leo deserve a special shout-out as they were all amazing.
The entertainment team were brilliant. They seemed to work from morning until night, running activities during the day before performing in the evening shows. They all deserve credit for how hard they work. Gustavo was our favourite – hilarious, full of energy and with some impressive swivel hips! 🤣
We tried the Chinese, Italian and Mexican à la carte restaurants. The Chinese wasn’t my favourite, although I wasn’t feeling 100%, and everyone else in our group enjoyed it. The Italian was excellent, especially the steak. The Mexican had a beautiful beachfront setting, which is why we went back a second time. The steak wasn’t quite to my taste, but the enchiladas on our second visit were really good. I didn’t try the steak house but others in the group did and said it was nice.
The pools were incredibly warm – more like a hot bath! We spent most of our time at the quieter pool at the back of the resort, which was lovely. The adults-only pool could get very busy and occasionally had an unpleasant smell, probably due to the heat and spilled drinks. We also enjoyed the foam party and aqua aerobics at the activity pool.
The main bar was always busy. Some of the staff could have been a little friendlier, but they were clearly under a lot of pressure. The sports bar was great though – Diana, David and the rest of the team were always welcoming.
The White Party and Neon Party were definitely highlights. They were great fun with an amazing atmosphere – more like a rave than your typical hotel entertainment!
Overall, I’d rate this hotel 4.5/5. We had a fantastic family holiday, the staff worked incredibly hard, and there was plenty to enjoy. My only real negatives would be that some of the pool areas could have been cleaned a little more often, and I nearly got flattened by someone cutting the palm trees! 🤣
One final thing to mention is Mexico itself. We found it quite expensive, and outside the hotel it felt like tipping was expected everywhere, which can become a little frustrating on top of the already high prices.
Would we return? Yes – especially with a big family group. The hotel has a great atmosphere, good food, and an amazing entertainment team that really helps make the holiday memorable.
We have been here many times and it just keeps getting better! We had virtually no seaweed during our stay. amazing staff, excellent food, clean resort and beach
Loved the entertainment and party nights led by Noelberto (top bloke) and the team. Loads of fun things going on like the neon and white party, coconut festival and weekly foam party in the pool. The fitness like stretch and aqua fit with Daniel and Jackie was great too.
Attacked robbed assaulted the staff hide the rapist and they all work together this place is unsafe and needs to be shut down and investigated. I would not recommend coming to. This place unless it’s revenge!!
Amazing hotel for the price we paid- yes the rooms are a little dated but that is literally the only negative I can think of for this hotel. Rooms were clean, the staff are so incredibly friendly, the food was great and having the choice of the 4 restaurants was a great bonus (you can visit these as many times as you like). We thought the steak and Italian restaurants were the best, the Mexican restaurant at the beach was not good at all, we didn’t enjoy our meal here, it was like the food had been sat under the serving dish for a long time. The Chinese was ok for sushi & starters but the rest was not good but this might be personal preference. We always found something in the buffet restaurant when we ate there, lots of choice and fresh things being cooked. The lunch buffet at the beach was not great- too many flies around- we only ate here once and preferred to walk back up to tequila for our lunch. Kids entertainment on a night was brilliant, as was the kids pool. Although my son was too young for the kids club they still asked if he wanted to colour a picture and have it made onto a t-shirt which I thought was really kind. I would say this hotel has abit of everything, if you wanted a boozy holiday, the adults pool with swim up bar was always packed and sounded great fun but it also had the family side and it worked really well. Entertainment on a night was fantastic, probably the best all inclusive entertainment I’ve experienced, you can tell there is a lot of effort put into this. Drinks were fab, couldn’t fault anything with those. Beach was stunning! Plenty of palm trees providing shade, loads of beds, it never felt busy at the beach, it was very chilled. Seaweed was an issue on some days, staff worked tirelessly to clear the beach of this, just nature unfortunately. We were lucky that it wasn’t every day, would probably say it was really bad only 2-3 days of our 2 week holiday and we spent almost every day at the beach. All in all amazing family holiday and would return in a heartbeat.
