Palmaia The House of AiA

TripAdvisor Review
Mexico, North America
Playa del Carmen

Strategically situated at the tail end of the most beautiful beach in the Riviera Maya, The House of AïA brings us Palmaïa, an exclusive beach enclave focused on connecting us to nature, ourselves, and the sanctity of life. Every effort was taken to ensure the original landscape remains untouched to feel the healing authenticity of old-growth trees and naturally occurring, cool-water cenotes. All guests reside in ocean-front suites: some with swim-out access to the infinity pools, others with sweeping views of the sea, and a few nestled among the ocean-side mangroves. Guests also enjoy high-end amenities without sacrificing environmentally friendly practices, while the restaurants offer the best cuisine in the region, extensive plant-based options, and impeccable style. But even still, the real jewels are the Architects of Life personal growth program and the Rituals of Sound series. The Hotel is Pet Friendly, for more information contact the hotel.

Palmaïa sounded too good to be true. Somehow, it was even better.

Before booking Palmaïa, we honestly wondered if it could possibly live up to what we were reading. It sounded almost too good to be true, and it was considerably more than we had ever spent on a vacation. We ultimately decided to take the chance. Palmaïa didn't just live up to our expectations—it exceeded them.

What made this place so extraordinary for us was how effortlessly it aligned with our family. The wellness component never felt forced or performative. There was no pressure to participate in anything. We simply chose the experiences that lit us up and let the rest go. At the same time, this is definitely not a place where wellness means you can't have fun. We loved the DJ sessions at the beach club, the live musicians were fantastic, and there was plenty of opportunity to have a great time without the "drink until you drop" atmosphere of some all-inclusive resorts.

One of the absolute highlights was a sound experience with René Nájera. His combination of gongs and other instruments created an experience unlike anything I have ever encountered. René is an extraordinarily gifted musician and sound practitioner, and this was one of those experiences I know I will remember long after the vacation itself.

Then there is the food. The food at Palmaïa deserves a review of its own. We ate at every restaurant, and each had its own beautifully designed atmosphere and adventurous cuisine. My daughter and I aren't normally particularly adventurous eaters, but at Palmaïa we found ourselves wanting to try everything. We had never experienced this level of "foodiness" before, and we loved it.

Even more remarkable was how Palmaïa handled our gluten and dairy allergies. The staff already knew about our dietary restrictions before we entered the restaurants, and probably 90% of what we encountered could be prepared for us. At many restaurants elsewhere, making something gluten- or dairy-free means simply removing the bread, sauce, cheese or some other important part of the dish. You're left with a diminished version of what everyone else is eating. That was absolutely not our experience at Palmaïa. The food still felt complete, creative and intentional. For people accustomed to scanning a menu hoping to find the one thing they can safely eat, having an entire world of interesting food open up to us was an incredible experience.

Our swim-out room was beautiful, immaculate and perfectly located. The pool was never crowded and frequently felt like our own private pool. We had a wonderful view that included the beautiful AiA sculpture. Housekeeping was exceptional—somehow our room was attended to twice a day without the service ever feeling intrusive. After we asked for extra water once, the housekeeping staff simply remembered and continued leaving extra water for us. That small example captures a lot about the service at Palmaïa: attentive without hovering, and often anticipating what we needed before we asked.

But as beautiful as the resort is, the people are what made Palmaïa truly exceptional. There is a difference between someone being friendly because hospitality is their job and someone being genuinely warm and kind. We experienced the latter over and over again.

Oscar gave us an excellent introduction to the resort and immediately made us feel welcome. Blas was wonderful at dinner, but what struck us was that his friendliness didn't end when we weren't sitting at one of his tables—he would go out of his way just to say hello. His warmth was genuine and infectious. Sergio at Charly's Vegan Tacos had a disarming smile and genuinely kind heart. Eduardo was an expert server who seemed to know every detail of some very complex menus, but what we remember most were the conversations. He shared things about himself and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us as people.

And then there was Danny from pool service, who was attentive, easygoing and just a super-cool guy to talk with. He shared his knowledge of the area and Mexico with us and somehow had a knack for appearing at exactly the right moment with fresh coconuts for all three of us. Those coconuts became one of the little pleasures of our days.

We also want to recognize Ale, Samuel, Ismael, Alejandro, Felix, and Luis, who were among the many people who contributed to our experience. Ale and Ismael at LEK and Luis at Su Casa particularly deserve our thanks. There are undoubtedly people whose names we've forgotten, and that's actually one of the problems with trying to recognize the staff individually: there were simply so many wonderful interactions.

Something else happened at Palmaïa that we weren't necessarily expecting. We connected with people. We met like-minded guests, struck up conversations with strangers, dined together and made fast friends. There was a warmth and openness to the place that made those connections happen naturally. We arrived as a family looking forward to spending time together, but some of our favorite memories also involve people we didn't know when we arrived.

The resort itself is gorgeous—beautifully maintained, exceptionally clean and thoughtfully designed. Each restaurant has its own distinct design and personality rather than feeling like another room in the same resort. Despite the level of luxury, we never felt uncomfortable or out of place. From the beginning, we simply felt welcomed.

That may ultimately be the best word I can use to describe Palmaïa.

We initially dismissed Palmaïa because it was outside what we normally spend on a vacation. We have never invested this much money in one trip, and naturally we wondered whether it could possibly be worth it.

It was.

For our family, the beautiful surroundings, extraordinary food, wellness experiences, genuine human connections and remarkable staff created something we haven't experienced anywhere else. Palmaïa wasn't simply a luxurious vacation. It felt like a place that somehow fit us.

We will absolutely be back.

Family Trip To Palmaïa

I went to Palmaïa with my parents in mid August and it was the best experience ever! By the time we left we were already planning our next trip.

There were so many highlights of the trip that it makes it hard to narrow down for just a review, but I have to start with the food. It was genuinely some of the best food I have ever had. My parents and I are all allergic to gluten and dairy which typically makes travel difficult. Here it was so easy!! Pretty much every time we sat down our server already knew about our allergies and what we could safely eat on the menus. (Which was pretty much everything!!) I tend to be pretty picky about food and was nervous about if I would like what was being offered. I decided to lean in and go outside of my comfort zone and everything I tried was absolutely delicious. I totally recommend talking with your servers and seeing what they recommend. All of the staff were so very knowledgeable about the menus and seemed to really enjoy connecting with their guests. It helped that we were there in the slow season because we had more time to get to know the incredibly kind staff.

One of my favorite parts of Palmaïa was how the resort was woven into the nature surrounding it. The cenotes scattered around the property were beautiful and such a lovely unique offer. The beaches were gorgeous and clean despite the amount of sargassum that was around. They raked every day so it didn't impact our experience pretty much at all. The ocean was still warm and so peaceful. One of the best parts of every day was the amount of wildlife we saw. We saw so many monkeys, lizards, iguanas, and plenty of other animals and birds I don't even know the name of. I totally recommend grabbing one of the bikes they provide and exploring the property to find all of the cute critters!!

I cannot speak highly enough about the service we experienced. Every person we saw, no matter what part of the resort they worked for, were so kind and helpful. Everyone you walk by will say hello or ask you how your stay has been. It truly is something special to be in a place where you feel so well taken care of. Some people in particular I would love to highlight were: Oscar who gave us a tour of the property when we first visited, Blas who was a server that we had at multiple restaurants who showed us all the secrets of the drink menus, Ale who was a server at Lek, Samual, Sergio who we first met at the taco truck who was one of the kindest people I have ever met, Ismael who what's another server at Lek, Alejandro, Eduardo who was our server on our final night there who made my Mom's birthday so special with the tastiest cake we have ever had, Felix, Danny who provided poolside service and was so knowledgeable about the resort, and Luis who was a server at Su Casa.

I truly cannot recommend this place enough and cannot wait to go back next year!!!

The best vacation of our lives!!!!

I could not possibly be more happy with my stay here!! The internet does not do the beauty of this place justice!! We loved it so very much that we are already planning a return visit. While it was beyond stunning, the amenities were amazing and the wildlife (including the cutest monkeys ever) were indescribable, it was truly the staff that made this place extra magical! I have never felt more taken care of and provided for!! While we truly loved everyone our stand out favorites were: Esteban, out tour guide Oscar, Blas who was unthinkingly attentive and thoughtful….. other awesome servers were: Ale, Samual, Ismael, Alejandro, Eduardo, Felix, Luis. Danny was an amazingly attentive server by the pool, and we definitely asked him for far too many fresh coconut waters!! I will say that my favorite server had to be Sergio who mostly worked at the taco truck! He was so sweet, so kind and just beyond adorable!!!! And all of the chefs are truly gifted, as we had the best food of our lives during our stay!!!!! Even this review doesn’t do Palmaia justice!!!

A true gem~!

Our family spent over a week at Palmaia. From the second we arrived until the second we left, we genuinely felt like the atmosphere & the employees made this a place that we hope to be able to enjoy every year moving forward. Our nomadic guide Oscar & Kassandra were so helpful, accommodating and kind with our every request. The restaurant staff treated our every meal experience like 5 stars. I wish I could remember all their names. Raul, Eduardo, Luis, Adriana at Eolo, the pool bar servers, the ladies at Plantissa. Every single one of their staff always had a positive attitude and when asked for recommendations, they were more than willing & happy to give them. The food is truly unlike anything we've ever experienced, and as vegans we ate and drank like royalty. Our room always felt cleaned & maintained and our mini fridge was always restocked at our request. The ambiance here is unlike any other. You feel like you're one with nature in a way surrounded by the trees throughout the resort. The lighting in every single space is also so beautiful and peaceful to enjoy at night. The monkeys were so much fun to see in their natural element. We felt very safe and we were able to let go of "real life" and reset which meant the world to us. Thank you Palmaia & staff for an amazing experience for our family, we can't wait to go back!
