El Taj has also received recognition from The New York Times and USA Today for its design, luxury, and excellence in service. We are not an all-inclusive Ritz-type resort, but we are considered to be the best of the area's hotels. Playa del Carmen has a lot to offer, but nothing compares to El Taj.

Elevator was broken, no handrails on steps and the place SMELLS OF DIRTY SEAWEED!!!!
DIRTY, RUN DOWN AND IT SMELLS!!!!! I'll start off with the elevator broken and our room on the 3rd floor. I have a bad knee and would have never booked if I knew there wasn't a usable elevator. We asked if they had any other options so they put us on the 1st floor - but to get into the room, you have to walk up steps, walk across a landing then walk down to get to the room. And, the railing was broken. They offered to let us use the door to the garage which was level with our room but they keep it locked. To get the key from the manager (EVERY TIME I WANT TO LEAVE THE HOTEL AND COME BACK IN), I have to walk up and down the main flights of stairs. It made no sense to do that.
Then there's the smell from the seaweed. Its SO strong my husband was literally gagging when we first arrived. I know the hotel can't help this but it's still a terrible experience for guests. Maybe it was the time of year we went (mid-July) since other guest reviews don't seem to mention it. The rooms are dated (sofa had a hole in it) and looked like something from the 90's. We had a deck off our bedroom that was completely destroyed from rot. The windows are so foggy from being old you can barely see outside on the ocean side. We checked out as soon as we realized that there was no way I could get in or out of the property due to the steps so the crappy room was somewhat irrelevant but posting so other know that this place looks NOTHING like the pics. We were so disappointed and booked an airbnb for our trip instead. Now the hotel won't refund us despite their elevator NOT working so the owner's kind of a jerk on top of it all. BEWARE!!

DO NOT STAY HERE! There is a pungent smell from the seaweed that has taken over this property
There is a very bad smell throughout the rooms and property. It is extremely strong and gave my kids migraines. They did not disclose this to us ahead of our stay. It is really not tolerable. We have the fans and AC on with all of the doors and windows closed and cannot escape the smell. The pools are also very dirty and property needs a lot of updating. It is definitely not worth the price you’re paying.

Great Hotel Great Location
We are on a combined business and family trip. This condohotel was perfect! You get massage and restaurant discounts. The room selection is wide and can fit most budgets depending upon your budget. Front staff and bellman were very helpful. Our condo was very clean and well stocked with everything you would need (except groceries) if you decided to cook. Within walking distance of malls, ferries to Cozumel, and shopping area, restaurants,etc. Has two pools. Some of the larger condos have private patios. Some rooms have views of the sea. If you are tired of big chain hotels--think El Taj Playa Del Carmen Mexico

Outstanding Service by Claudia
We had a wonderful experience thanks to Claudia, our room service attendant. She consistently kept our room clean, fresh, and absolutely spotless throughout our stay. Her attention to detail and dedication did not go unnoticed. It was always a pleasure returning to such a well-maintained space.
