Cancun

A tropical paradise stretching over 12 km across the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is a very desirable location. It is home to the world’s second largest barrier reef and boasts miles of powdery, white beaches with crystal clear, azure waters.

When to go

Cancun hosts a tropical monsoon climate meaning it is hot all year with temperatures averaging between the mid and high 20s consistently. Most rainfall comes between June and November when the rainy season occurs and temperatures are the hottest and humid at this time.

Top Attractions

Visit the Maya Museum to learn the rich history of Cancun, from ancient Mayan roots to sculptures and skeletal remains.

The Cancun Underwater Museum was created after a storm damaged the National Marine Park. While the art is a beautiful, if you want to get a different perspective, check out the glass bottom boat.

You can also take a trip up the 110-metre-tall Scenic Tower to see a birds-eye view of the city and its coastline or head to Urbano Kabah Park. It is a natural oasis home to a playground and petting zoo in among the palm trees and gardens.

Beaches

There are a number of beautiful beaches worth visting in Cancun.

  • Playa la Perlas Beach: A sandy beach with welcoming turquoise water, Playa la Perlas is a flat and quiet beach in the north.
  • Playa Linda: Also known as turtle beach, it is home to the Scenic Tower. Locals love this picturesque beach and warm water and this is the spot where the Caribbean meets a freshwater lagoon and where you can spot giant turtles and iguanas in the surf zone.
  • Playa Langosta: Another favourite beach for locals, it has warm, soft sand and shallow waters. The far end of the beach is quiet and shaded but closer to the wharf is where the action happens.
  • Playa Tortugas: Swimmer sand sun worshippers paradise. Enjoy the calm waters and chilly offshore winds while sampling Mexican food from the street vendors who set up on the shoreline.
  • Playa Caracol: This beach is full of blinding white sand is found in the heart of the hotel zone.
  • Playa Chac Mool: It is one of the quieter beaches in Cancun, perfect for a relaxed day of swimming and sunbathing.
Culture

Due to it being a historical Mayan site there are many archaeological sites to visit including:

  • Las Ruinas del Ray
  • El Meco
  • And world-famous Chichen Itza is in the neighbouring state
Dining

You can get everything in Cancun, from little street vendors to Italian restaurants to innovative dishes. You could visit Marakame Cafe for a brunch buffet till noon and live music at night. Or for fine dining, head to Captain’s Cove overlooking the hotel zone for the catch of the day.

Entertainment

Cancun nightlife started 20 years ago and is still going strong. Visit La Vaquita for a wild and late night full of drinks and dancing. Or head to Palazzo Cancun for themed nights and a VIP experience. Coco Bongo is one of the most famous clubs in Cancun, but it’s an experience, not just a night out.

Getting Around

Taxis are readily available all-around Cancun and, although there are no meters, your rates are set by how many ‘zones’ you travel through (they can be found in most hotels).

The public bus service in Cancun runs 24/7 and is the cheapest way of getting around. Of course cars, motorbikes and mopeds are all available to hire for the duration of your stay too, and some hotels have bicycles to use for guests.
