Fairfield by Marriott Anjuna – Mixed Stay, Service Needs Significant Improvement
The stay started off inconsistently. I received a message in the morning saying my room was ready, but when I arrived around 12:30 PM I was told it was not ready after all.
I had lunch plans and was heading out when I noticed my luggage sitting unattended downstairs near the parking area in the heat. This was concerning because I had injectable medication inside the bag that should not be exposed to high temperatures. Beyond that, leaving luggage unattended in a parking area is simply not a good look from a security perspective. After I pointed it out, the porter moved it upstairs into the lobby.
When I returned later, the actual check-in itself was smooth.
The bed was comfortable and generally what I would expect from Marriott standards.
Unfortunately, several small maintenance and housekeeping issues added up quickly. The air conditioning was weak and randomly shut itself off every hour or two, with the room struggling to stay below around 26°C. In Goa’s climate, that becomes uncomfortable fairly quickly.
The nightstands felt greasy and had visible marks on them. The TV was mounted crooked at an angle. Not a major issue by itself, but details matter.
The shower setup was also odd — there were two shampoo/conditioner dispensers but no body wash dispenser in the shower itself. Instead, body wash was placed near the sink area.
Service was the weakest part of the stay.
I became unwell during my trip and eventually had to visit Vision Hospital in Mapusa, where I was prescribed antibiotics. Because I had a stomach bug and didn’t feel well enough to leave the room, I ordered food delivery and hoped the driver could simply leave it at the front desk.
Instead, security/front entrance staff refused to let the driver in until I called reception. I was then told outside food was “not allowed” at the hotel. Only after I mentioned I would move to another property did they finally allow it. For a Marriott-branded hotel, especially when a guest is visibly sick, this felt unnecessarily inflexible and lacking in empathy.
I also ordered room service — just a virgin piña colada and yogurt. After waiting around 45 minutes with nothing arriving, I called again and was told they would check. A few minutes later I received a call saying the waiter had been outside my room but could not knock because I had the Do Not Disturb sign on.
That explanation honestly made very little sense. If a guest actively orders room service, basic common sense says you knock for the delivery.
When the order finally arrived, both the yogurt and mocktail were warm and basically room temperature. The drink had no garnish and looked rushed. Not ideal when you’re already feeling sick.
The breakfast buffet was average to slightly above average. Nothing exceptional, but acceptable overall.
One positive worth mentioning is that the breakfast staff were friendly, polite, and helpful throughout the stay.
I spent many years as a Marriott Ambassador Elite member before retiring and have stayed at a large number of Marriott properties around the world. I’m now only a Gold member, but I still have a fairly strong sense of what the Marriott standard usually looks like.
This property falls near the bottom tier of Marriott stays I’ve experienced. Not the absolute worst, but definitely among the weaker ones from a service and operational perspective.
The biggest issue wasn’t one catastrophic problem — it was the constant accumulation of small issues, lack of attention to detail, and poor judgment calls by staff.
For comparison, I also recently stayed at the Fairfield in Calangute and the Courtyard in Colva, and those experiences were night-and-day better than Fairfield Anjuna.
