Disappointing Stay at Taj Samudra, Sri Lanka
My recent stay at Taj Samudra in Sri Lanka left much to be desired, and it is unfortunate to see how much of its former glory this property has lost. Once a premier name, the hotel now feels heavily outdated, struggling to keep pace with modern hospitality standards. Areas of Major Concern Outdated Property: The infrastructure and interiors feel tired and dated, lacking the modern luxury, crisp design, and fresh ambiance expected at this price point. It desperately needs a comprehensive renovation to reclaim its charm. Sluggish Service: The staff demeanor across various touchpoints felt notably slow and uninspired, lacking the proactive hospitality and warmth that define a true five-star experience. The Club Category Paradox: One of the most frustrating aspects was the club lounge experience. Booking a club category room usually guarantees exclusive perks, yet finding out that breakfast is not properly served in the club lounge completely defeats the purpose. Why would any guest choose to book a club category room if basic expected amenities are missing? The Competition Has Surpassed It Given how competitive Colombo's hospitality market is right now, properties cannot afford to rest on past reputation. For context, having recently stayed at nearby hotels like Cinnamon Life City of Dreams, the contrast is night and day—where Cinnamon Life delivers a next-level, modern luxury experience, Taj Samudra feels stuck in the past.
Taj Samudra needs a serious wake-up call, modern updates, and a major service overhaul if it wants to stay relevant against strong, forward-thinking competitors in the region.

Excellent Service and a Great Stay at Taj Samudra
We had a wonderful 11-night stay at Taj Samudra.
We had requested an early check-in and were initially given an older room. However, after speaking with the front office team, they kindly upgraded us to a much better, recently renovated room, which we really appreciated.
The hotel is very centrally located, making it easy to travel to many of the main areas in Colombo. Despite its central location, we did not experience much noise during our stay. The room was also very clean and comfortable.
One of the highlights for us was the breakfast buffet. The spread was excellent, with a great variety of food, and the staff were always helpful and welcoming.
A special mention must go to Yasiru and Indunil at the restaurant. They went out of their way to arrange suitable food for our baby, which made our stay so much easier. Every day, they would come over to say hello and make sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed.
Special thanks also to Bhagya and the other stewards, who became very friendly with our baby and made us feel especially welcome.
Overall, we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. If we visit Colombo again, we would definitely consider staying at Taj Samudra again.
