The Sugar Beach Hotel is set in palatial grounds in Wolmar, Mauritius. Enclosed in its own grove of palm trees, the Sugar Beach Hotel feels wonderfully removed from the rest of the word, but the thriving port of St Louis is close by. Beyond the manicured gardens the resort extends to the beach which boasts half a kilometre of perfect white sand.

There are lots of wonderful facilities to enjoy here including a fully-equipped fitness centre, tennis courts and some great opportunities for water sports and scuba diving.* There are also some great trails to explore through the trees and further out into the island - and you can hire bicycles* at the hotel to help you get about.
Access to the incredible spa, complete with Turkish bath (or hammam) is another perk of staying at the Sugar Beach Hotel. And another good reason to take things easy and go with the flow.

You'll want plenty of time to enjoy your room. Standard Garden View are air conditioned and elegantly furnished with a balcony or terrace, rooms continue the plantation theme with use of real wood and complementary colours. All rooms are en suite and come with LCD flat-screen satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, safe and hairdryer. You could also choose to upgrade to a selection of beautiful rooms including those with a seaview or a beachfront room.
There's a lovely laidback feeling at the Sugar Beach Hotel. Perhaps it's the warm climate - people just want to relax and enjoy life here without all the usual hustle and bustle. More Stress Than Relaxation – Very Disappointing Experience
Based on the reviews, we expected to have an amazing holiday, but unfortunately, the reality was completely different. I honestly don’t understand the large number of positive reviews. During our stay, we spoke to several other guests, and many of them had very similar experiences to ours.
The problems started almost immediately after check-in. There was black mould in our room and a very strong, unpleasant smell coming from the drains. We had also requested a double bed, but instead we were given two separate beds. Changing rooms was apparently not possible, so the staff “fixed” the mould by covering it with clear silicone, pushed the two beds together, and considered the problem solved.
After four days, we were suddenly told that we would be leaving the next day. The only problem was that they had failed to turn our voucher over and check the other side, where the remaining four days of our stay were clearly stated. This is definitely not something I would expect from a hotel of this category.
The staff and overall organisation of the service were also a major disappointment. Very often, it felt as though nobody really knew what they were supposed to be doing. You order a drink with your meal and it arrives when you have already finished eating. On one occasion, I gave a staff member a €10 tip, but after that we never saw her again and she didn’t even return to our table.
We had an All Inclusive package, but throughout the stay, we constantly felt as though we were expected to pay for everything again. Also, be careful with the service button by the sun loungers on the beach – the service connected with it may come with an additional charge, which was quite surprising considering we were on an All Inclusive package.
The final straw came when we received a bill for approximately €1,400, which even included charges for All Inclusive again. After a lot of unnecessary stress and arguing, the issue was finally resolved only after involving the hotel’s general manager.
We came to Mauritius to relax, but our stay at Sugar Beach brought us more stress than relaxation. For a hotel of this standard and price category, we expected a completely different level of service.
For us, this was our first and definitely our last stay at Sugar Beach. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we will not be returning.

Our Honeymoon at Sugar Beach We were warmly welcome by the team on arrival. We booked suite 515, the room had a stunning view. The decor, comfort, the room amenities, all were perfect. We strongly recommend that suite. We had dinner at the buffet and we tried the a la carte restaurant as well. Maré Maré and Buddha Bar. The food was delicious, the presentation and taste were all on top 👌 Thank you Chef Mauree and his Brigade. The cuisine was exquisite. The staff were friendly and helpful. A special mention to some of the staff who went above and beyond are Arvind, the EAM, very helpful, Chesley at reception for the smooth check in and for extending late checkout as well. Anuradha Servais, the Service Excellence Manager who went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable. Words are not enough to thank her. I would like to thank all the team at Sugar Beach for your kindness and thoughfulness We strongly recommend this resort. We will go back again and will recommend to our friends and family.
Beautiful resort, but solo travellers deserve equal attention
Sugar Beach is a beautiful resort in an excellent location, and overall I enjoyed my stay. My main disappointment was the service, particularly as a solo traveller. Throughout my stay, I repeatedly observed couples and families receiving quicker and more attentive service, even when they arrived after me. Staff would sometimes check on their tables several times before attending to me once. I also experienced slow service at the lunch area and, on one occasion, no service at the bar. While the overall service was good, solo travellers should receive the same level of attention as couples and families. I hope this is something management considers going forward.

4th time at Sugar and still loving it!
4th time at Sugar beach and absolutely love it! From the wonderful Christine at Le Patio who was truly the best and so attentative to our main man, Fazle at the beach bar! The staff are so incredible and make you feel at home! Definitely one for the books yet again.
One point to note - all inclusive wine selection lacks other 5 star options and we ended up paying for better wine every night. The selection needs a review.

A perfect honeymoon
We stayed at Sugar Beach for our honeymoon. We were kindly given an upgrade, as the room we had booked was unavailable. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and offered views of both the pool and the beach. The breakfast and dinner buffets were rich and wonderfully varied. The staff were always kind, courteous, and never intrusive.
The hotel also surprised us with a complimentary honeymoon dinner, a thoughtful gesture we truly appreciated. On our last day, since our flight was late in the evening, they generously allowed us to keep our room beyond the 12:00 check-out time, which made our departure much more relaxing.
A special mention goes to Vidhya, who welcomed us with outstanding professionalism. Her attentiveness, warmth, and genuine empathy made us feel truly cared for from the very first moment. She is a real asset to the hotel, and we are deeply grateful for everything she did to make our stay so special.
