Its mile long beach of immaculate white sand fringed by tropical gardens its refined and deliciously nostalgic decor inspired by turn of the century plantation houses. Its butler service surpassing the colonial palaces of yesteryear its exotic and delicate cuisine are only some of the ingredients which have contributed to the hotel success.

Good Hotel - but could be great
We chose the Residence in Mauritius as we had stayed at the Residence in the Maldives and had loved it. This is a good hotel with an amazing staff, who could not have done any more to make us feel welcome
Our room was good and as described and the highlight was dining at the Plantation restaurant in the evening, this is a must do as it is excellent. The gym is fine and the spa is very good.
The areas that need to be improved are:
- The Breakfast Buffet - poor choice especially the fruit and overall quality needs to take a step up.
- Not enough quality options for vegetarians.
- Service around the pool very slow.
The points are meant to be constructive and would make a good hotel even better.
The staff do make this hotel and a special thanks to the two restaurant managers at Plantation who were fantastic. Finally an even more special mention to Sarah who looked after us at the bar, you are amazing.

Do not stay here, old, tired... terrible food and appaling service
This hotel is OLD, and not in a good way. I can imagine a nice resort 25 years ago but now it is tired, a bit run down and lacks any atmosphere.
First the good points:
- rooms are large and well appointed
- beach is stunning and sea is beautiful
Bad points:
- food is TERRIBLE, both in buffet and the "plantation" low quality and cheap ingredients
- service is appalling, I feel like most staff here are on their first job, lots of them, none of them seem to know what they are doing.
Several examples, they wont even serve you a coffee (which im willing to pay for) after dinner to your table (5* ? I dont think so!)
- pool area is tired and old, looks a bit run down
- drinks are criminally expensive, which I expect in a 5* resort.... this is not a 5 star resort.
We ended up going to the hotel next door "the Lux" for lunch and drinks everyday.... do yourself a favour anf just book that hotel.
Do not stay at "The Residence" you will be disapppinted.

Another wonderful stay at The Residencee
We stay regularly at this wonderful, colonial style hotel, situated at one of the best beaches at Belle Mare. We love the warmth and friendliness of the staff, the spacious and well appointed rooms, and the excellent food. Highly recommended.

Paradise
The Residence in Mauritius is a beautiful hotel in a perfect setting. I would highly recommend it. The service, food and facilities are excellent. The building is starting to show its age in some places but this is minimal and the wonderful positives far outweigh this one minor negative.

Fantastic!
We have just returned from a two week stay in The Residence hotel, we had an amazing time, I have just seen the last two reviews and can honestly not agree less with the comments. The hotel is located in a stunning position, there is snorkelling from the beach but not loads of fish although my husband did see a turtle, there are snorkelling trips included that take you out to the coral reef where you’ll see more fish and sea life, there is also some great sea activities included.we tried the sea kayaks, water skiing and snorkelling trips. Gorgeous views from the hotel.
The rooms are clean, spacious and have very comfortable beds. The butler service is an added wow factor for sure.
The hotel does allow children and families and there is a kids club I believe for them.
The food in the buffet was varied and set on a theme each night, there was a large selection and in my experience plenty of choice for vegetarians or pescatarians as well as meat eaters. It was all very delicious and of a high standard, lots of choice. We paid extra for the lobster night and ate next to the beach in the plantation restaurant , it was amazing and the best meal we have ever had! Yes drinks are extra but that’s to be expected when paying for half board.
All of the staff, from the reception staff who were so helpful each time we spoke to them, to the really friendly staff in the buffet restaurant who always greeted us warmly and were happy to help if we asked for anything, to the friendly housekeeping who made sure we had what we needed in our rooms and the staff around the pool and beach who were happy to help and always had a smile and happy to have a friendly chat.
We found the hotel to be quiet and not overly noisy considering the amount of guests, this may be due to the scale of the hotel and how well spread out sun loungers etc were.
We had 3 treatments at the SPA between us over the two weeks and they were amazing, each one, the staff were fantastic and so good at what they do, if you get chance to go I would definitely recommend it.
Overall, we had a fantastic time, and would return to the hotel without a doubt, which I have never considered on previous holidays we have had, so I think that says quite a lot.
