We recently stayed at Alua Soul in Cala Egos and honestly had really mixed feelings about it.
Starting with the positives, the hotel was always really clean and our room was cleaned to a high standard every day. The entertainment was definitely the best part of the holiday. The entertainment team were amazing and worked so hard every day. A special mention to Katrina (I hope that’s her name!) who was so friendly, full of energy and always made everyone feel welcome. She is a real credit to the hotel. She worked so hard and needs some serious recognition! Big praises from us!
Sadly, that’s where the positives end for us.
The biggest let down was the attitude of a lot of the bar staff. Not all of them, but most came across as quite rude and like serving you was an inconvenience. One time we ordered a Coke Zero but were given regular Coke. When we politely explained we’d ordered Coke Zero, we were met with eye rolls and told we’d asked for Coke. It was such an unnecessary interaction over a simple mistake. Having friends who are diabetic this could make them unwell!
Another time, a bartender was on his phone when I politely asked for a drink trying not to interrupt so ask quietly and was trying to keep it quick for him. He just said “No.” I asked again, saying “please”, and he replied with what sounded like “That’s the magic word.” It wasn’t said as a joke and came across really patronising. I was genuinely left feeling embarrassed. I also heard the same man be very abrupt to other guests i felt as we were a big inconvenience for asking for anything which is not what you expect for asking nicely for a soft drink!
The food was also disappointing, especially the Grill à la carte restaurant. The starters were laid out buffet-style and had clearly been sitting there for a while. They were soggy and just not very nice, which wasn’t what we expected from an à la carte restaurant.
Service in the main restaurant was really hit and miss too. Some days it was absolutely fine, but other times we’d be seated and left waiting around 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. I completely understand delays when staff are busy as I’ve worked in hospitality myself, but the restaurant often wasn’t busy and staff could clearly see we were waiting.
The pool was also surprisingly warm. We know Mallorca was incredibly hot while we were there, but it almost felt like bath water and wasn’t very refreshing. The pool was also missing so many tiles and i cut my feet numerous times. During our stay, our friends who were travelling with us became really unwell with sickness and diarrhoea. We’re not saying it was definitely caused by the food or the pool because we honestly don’t know, but it did make us question it. Food safety and keeping the pool clean are so important, especially in such high temperatures.
We also understand that the hotel uses salt water, which is due to the area and not necessarily the hotel’s fault, but I do wish I’d seen this mentioned in reviews beforehand. The showers were really uncomfortable to use and, as someone with a lot of hair, I never felt like I could wash it properly. The water was so salty that my eyes would burn while showering, and my hair was left feeling dry and heavy afterwards.
One thing that also disappointed us was the all-inclusive package. There were quite a few drinks and certain spirts even coffees that weren’t included, such as Aperol Spritz and Hugo Spritz, which came as an extra charge. We completely understand that some premium drinks aren’t included, but it felt like there were way more exclusions than we expected. At times, it almost felt like the hotel was more focused on guests who were half board because they were spending more money on drinks throughout the day. We chose all-inclusive so we wouldn’t have to keep thinking about extra costs, so this was quite disappointing.
As a younger couple travelling with another couple, we just don’t feel the amount we paid for five days matched the experience we had. That’s the most disappointing part because we absolutely love Cala d’Or and will definitely be coming back to the area. Unfortunately, we just don’t think we’d stay at this hotel again.
It’s such a shame because the hotel has so much potential. The rooms were spotless and the entertainment team really made our holiday, but the poor customer service from a lot of the bar staff and the inconsistency in other areas really let the hotel down. I’d really suggest reading the lower rated reviews before making your decision to stay here. When checking out our wristbands were cut off and nothing was said like how was your stay nothing! We left feeling nothing more than shocked and disappointed and that we wasted a week of our annual leave to not enjoy ourselves 😔
We had a very enjoyable stay at AluaSoul. The stand out for us was the staff, particularly Russ and co in the Marea restaurant at breakfast who went above and beyond and remembered us each day. P.S you must have the waffles!
My Favourite Club was worth the investment - separate pool, bar, and great views of the sea were all worth it to us!
À la carte restaurants were a little disappointing, but Marea again stood out for us. La Trattoria was also a great meal. However, the hotel is in a good location to access Cala Egos town and Cala D’Or which had lots of option if you wanted to go out. We went in prime season so the Ting Ting train was always busy which made getting out a little tricky, but the bus was regular and air connect which was well needed!
As with all hotels sunloungers are a little tricky but the beach always had space if needed.
Overall we had a great stay, and I would say that overall a 4 star feels fair for the hotel!
Perfekt service from Maria Sanso 💪💪
We returned to this wonderful hotel for the 2nd time and again it did not disappoint! We had a lovely room in the main building overlooking pool ( highly recommend requesting main building as other building has a lot of steps !) Rooms are modern , comfortable and immaculately clean . Food is wonderful great selection , beautifully presented . Highly recommend dining at the 3 speciality restaurants, it felt like a special occasion dining here and the views from the terrace of the cove are lovely . Have to mention Miriam who was amazing so friendly and lovely to chat to . Doing a wonderful job ! Drinks package €8 pp per night for unlimited drinks with your meal is great value . It includes beer , wine , cava & soft drinks . It’s a great idea . We swam in the sea every morning and enjoyed relaxing by the pool , we reserved our sunbeds putting towels down for 8am which was fine . Have to mention Mike and Carena on Entertainment team who were amazing , so friendly and welcoming! They have such good energy and truly care about making your holiday special ! They are both an absolute credit to your hotel . It’s a great location lovely walk to the marina and taxi into Cala D’or very reasonable . Highly recommend this hotel and will definitely return again . Thanks for another wonderful stay !
Cleanliness Hotel was kept really clean and always a cleaner in sight, I think it slightly differs dependant on which block you are in but we were in the one with MFC and it was spotless.
My favourite club (MFC) We are so glad we did this we think that we would have had a very different holiday without it here are a few reasons:
Rooms
Like any hotel there can be noise from other guests and this is down to luck really as to who is on your floor, we did hear lot of door slamming but think this is the way the fire doors close.
Lovely room, clean and modern and spacious with all required amenities, we had a new bottle of water everyday and bottle of wine on arrival which was a nice touch (think this may have been for MFC guests only not sure), and bath robes and slippers too. The shower gel and shampoo and conditioner were good and tea and coffee making facilities if you need them.
Food We had all inclusive and loved that there are 4 different restaurants to choose from, we could choose 3 and all were very good. Italian pizza’s were really nice and the chocolate pizza for dessert was so nice but way too much esp if you had pizza for your main. We only ate in the buffet 3-4 times and it was good, there is a pasta station at lunch and dinner and also a grill cooking fish and meat for you which I can’t remember having elsewhere and nice to have it cooked fresh. Good salad selection I am pescatarian and had plenty to choose from. The labelling was a bit hit and miss and then if I didn’t have my glasses couldn’t read the small text so may be a bit of an issue for anyone with allergies. The only small gripe we had was the buffet seemed to need more staff, we only ever got one drink and no one came back to ask if we needed any more and water was never topped up so we just ordered double.
All the staff were friendly and helpful and a special shout out to Ross, it was so lovely to see someone who was so happy making people happy on their holidays, always had food recommendations and recognised us across different restaurants.
Sunbeds Appreciate this is always a big of a contentious one but this is what really let the hotel down in our eyes. Not really sure what can be done to resolve it as there is just a lack of space for the size of the hotel but I am not a morning person and had to set an alarm to get a bed, in MFC we generally could still get a bed at 8.15am but not much after. We could see the main pools from our room and it looked full (with towels not people) before 8am. Due to the lack of space too you can’t really have one person in the shade and one in the sun as there is not much room to move the beds around. We were surprised how young the people were and the main hotel pool was rammed and have an 18-30’s vibe about it (we are in our 50’s)
