Unfortunately, this didn’t feel like a 5-star hotel to us, we have stayed in better 4 star hotels on the island!!
The hotel itself has a lot going for it, but our experience was really let down by the attitude and level of hospitality from some of the staff. At a 5-star resort, it’s not just about the facilities - it’s the service and how you are made to feel throughout your stay, and particularly when you leave. We left without that feeling of wanting to come back, which is such a shame.
I’m not sure what the hotel was like previously when it operated as Dreams, but I do think Grand Hyatt needs to look at how other genuine 5-star resorts deliver hospitality and guest service.
We were also disappointed by the spa offering. The hotel advertises a spa, but guests have to pay around €30 just to access the sauna/steam facilities, with treatments then costing €100+. At a hotel of this level, I would have expected basic spa facilities to be included for hotel guests, or at least for this to be made much clearer.
What was most disappointing was the end of our stay. Nobody even asked how our experience had been when we departed. It may sound like a small thing, but those final interactions make a huge difference in hospitality.
Sadly, we left with a bittersweet feeling at the end of what had otherwise been a lovely holiday. There are some great aspects to the hotel, but the service and overall hospitality need significant improvement before I would consider it a true 5-star experience.
We stayed in a Grand Club room and I would absolutely recommend upgrading to anyone considering it. We had a beautiful sea view, and the Grand Club benefits really made our week.
The breakfast was genuinely excellent every day — English beans and sausages, fresh fruit, crepes, waffles, an egg station, cereals, breads, meats and cheeses. There was loads of choice and the quality was consistently high.
The staff were all so lovely, friendly and helpful. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and they really made the stay special. When we arrived, hot and bothered, they gave us a cold flannel, a cold cava and a let us check in 3 hours early.
We chose B&B rather than all-inclusive because we like eating out. For comparison, all-inclusive would have been around £2,300 for the three of us for a week, whereas our hotel drinks bill was under £150 and we spent around £850 eating out at restaurants during the week.
One of the best Grand Club perks for us was the snack room, available from 10am–6pm, with soft drinks, coffee, sandwiches and cake all included. It meant we didn't need to buy lunch every day. You also get access to the nicest pool, plus an hour of complimentary spa access as part of the membership.
Our room had lovely toiletries and plenty of thoughtful extras including a comb, hairdryer and bathrobes. The activities programme was also really good, with plenty for both adults and children. We didn't do many as we were out exploring, but I liked that there was a great variety and the staff didn't hassle you to participate.
Despite being there in August, we could always find a sun lounger, which was a pleasant surprise!
The location is excellent too — great for the beach, walking to Rubicon Marina and heading down towards the harbour.
For us personally, I'm not sure we would do two weeks in Lanzarote, as there isn't quite enough for us to keep us occupied for that long. But for a week of relaxing by the pool, enjoying the beach, perhaps taking a boat trip and generally slowing down, it was lovely.
Only one little niggle: pool toys are apparently only allowed in the flumes pool, which was annoying because there are no signs explaining this — you just get told off when you use them elsewhere!
A few tips for eating and saving money Aldi is only a short walk away and suncream is less than £5 there. Everywhere else we saw it for around £20! We went through seven cans between three of us in a week and only brought three with us, so that was definitely a mistake.
For food, we had some really good meals:
El Bodega on the main seafront strip, towards the harbour end — lovely tapas, great service and really good food.
Bodega Delicias, on the road behind the seafront — authentic pizzas run by a lovely Italian couple. It looks quite unassuming, so don't feel like you need to dress up, but the pizza was delicious.
Brisa Marina on the front — great for local dishes. We had the Arroz Caldoso after a recommendation which was absolutely delicious.
Mumbai Masala in the marina — lovely tandoori curry, although quite expensive.
One final tip: some places that were recommended to us to eat out were honestly pretty rubbish! I'd definitely have a look at what people around you are actually eating before sitting down somewhere — you can usually tell pretty quickly which places are worth it.
Overall, a really lovely week and we'd definitely recommend the Grand Club option. Perfect for a relaxing holiday with the added bonus of being able to get out and enjoy some of the local restaurants rather than being tied to all-inclusive.
We stayed at Grand Hyatt Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort expecting the standard of a five-star Grand Hyatt. Unfortunately, several aspects of our stay fell below that standard, including room cleanliness, our late-arrival dinner arrangement and confusion surrounding the parking.
I want to be clear that not all staff were problematic. Some members of the team were friendly and helpful. However, I experienced rude and unhelpful behaviour from some staff members, including an interaction which I considered racist.
During my stay, I personally approached the Guest Experience Manager to explain our concerns and try to resolve them directly and privately. Unfortunately, I found the response from management so unhelpful that I ultimately felt I had no choice but to escalate the matter to Hyatt Corporate.
What disappointed me most was the subsequent handling of the complaint by the Guest Experience Manager. Rather than simply addressing the issues I had raised, I felt that my words and account of events were repeatedly reframed and misrepresented by him, culminating in the hotel’s original public response containing allegations about my conduct which I strongly disputed.
This was particularly disappointing because I had gone directly to management in person precisely because I wanted to explain my side of the story and resolve matters constructively.
Hyatt Corporate subsequently reviewed the matter and communicated with the hotel. Following its review, Hyatt confirmed that dust on our door frame had been overlooked and that follow-up action was taken with housekeeping. In hindsight, I wish I had taken more photographs of the condition of the room at the time, as they would have provided a more complete record of the cleanliness issues we encountered.
Hyatt also acknowledged that the communication regarding our late-arrival dinner may have created a different expectation, and that the parking arrangements were not sufficiently clear.
Hyatt’s final position was that its investigation did not identify inappropriate treatment by hotel associates. I respect that conclusion. Hyatt also acknowledged that it could not fully reconstruct every interaction and that the hotel and I have different perspectives regarding what occurred. The hotel’s original public response was subsequently revised.
Having subsequently read other guest reviews, I also noticed similar concerns about staff attitude and service being raised by other guests. I was also struck by a recurring style in some of the hotel’s responses: criticism is sometimes met by emphasising the hotel’s many positive reviews or explaining why a guest’s experience should be viewed differently.
A large number of positive reviews does not make an individual guest’s negative experience any less legitimate.
The hotel later offered a €612 goodwill refund, equivalent to the first three nights of our stay. For me, however, this was never simply about compensation.
The way our complaint was handled created a far greater reputational problem for the Grand Hyatt brand than the original service failures themselves.
The location is excellent and the resort is attractive, but based on our experience, I would expect considerably better complaint handling, communication and professionalism from a Grand Hyatt property.
Great hotel. Friendly staff. The buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner were fantastic. The variety of the foods were more than sufficient. In my travels, I found the Grand Hyatt Lanzarote lunch buffet was the best.
We had a wonderful stay at the hotel. It has everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The food at the Italian restaurant was absolutely delicious. Kelly recommended that we try it, and we were so glad we did everything was exquisite! Definitely a place we would recommend.
