This holiday wasn't planned. In fact, it was booked the day before as a complete "go for it" moment to celebrate my son's 18th birthday. We did absolutely no research whatsoever... and that turned out to be one of the best decisions we've ever made. We arrived just after midnight and were warmly welcomed by the reception staff. Although we'd missed dinner, we were handed food boxes before being shown to our room, which was such a thoughtful touch after travelling. Our room was only a short walk from reception, and our first reaction was, "Wow... this room is huge!" We opened the curtains to reveal a street view. Was it the most spectacular view in Gran Canaria? No. Did it matter? Not in the slightest. Because what the room lacked in scenery, it more than made up for in comfort. The air conditioning was nothing short of phenomenal. In the Gran Canaria heat, it was an absolute lifesaver, cooling the room down in minutes and making every night's sleep wonderfully comfortable. The beds were excellent, the room was spotless, the shower was fantastic, there were plenty of towels and toiletries, and the balcony was enormous. Better still, it caught the afternoon and evening sunshine, making it the perfect place to sit with a drink and unwind after a day exploring. Now for the part we'll never forget... Despite the hotel kindly providing us with food, my newly-turned-18-year-old son decided what he really needed at midnight was a Burger King. So off we went. A couple of minutes later we found ourselves walking towards the Yumbo Centre. As we got closer, I quietly noticed there didn't seem to be many ladies around. A few more steps and we realised we'd accidentally wandered into one of Europe's most famous LGBTQ+ destinations. Neither of us had the faintest idea! Let's just say both my son and I attracted rather more attention than we're used to. There were plenty of smiles, a few friendly compliments and more than one wink sent in our direction. My son was even told he was "very beautiful" and "very fresh." I've never seen anyone eat a Burger King so quickly. Let's just say the walk back to the hotel was completed at a pace that would have impressed an Olympic race walker! To be absolutely clear, everyone we met was friendly, welcoming and respectful. We didn't experience a single bit of trouble during our nine-day stay. Quite the opposite, in fact. It simply became one of those unexpected holiday stories that we'll still be laughing about years from now. The following morning we enjoyed an excellent buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. Halfway through breakfast my son casually Googled the area and announced, "Dad... this is the gay capital of Europe." I've never swallowed a mouthful of coffee so quickly! The hotel itself deserves every one of its five stars. The staff, without exception, were outstanding. Reception, housekeeping, restaurant staff, maintenance and everyone working behind the scenes all contributed to making our stay enjoyable. Hotels like this don't run themselves, and it's obvious there's a fantastic team working incredibly hard every single day. The restaurant offered plenty of choice each morning and evening, everything was fresh, well presented and constantly replenished. Service was always friendly and efficient. The pool area was another highlight. There were always plenty of sunbeds available, and the refreshing breeze that drifted through the hotel made relaxing by the pool even more enjoyable during the hottest part of the day. I did, however, avoid the double sunbeds... Not because they weren't comfortable—I simply didn't want to accidentally give the wrong impression while wearing my standard-issue British holiday shorts! Location-wise, you couldn't ask for more. Everything is within easy walking distance, whether you're looking for shops, restaurants, entertainment or simply somewhere to enjoy an evening stroll. Would we stay here again? Without hesitation. Fantastic staff, immaculate rooms, brilliant air conditioning, delicious food, comfortable beds, a huge sunny balcony and an atmosphere that made us smile from beginning to end. One final piece of advice... Do what we did if you want a genuine adventure. Book first. Research later. You never know—you might arrive expecting nothing more than a relaxing holiday and leave with wonderful memories, a few hilarious stories... and a reminder that some of the best holidays are the ones you never planned.
Greta hotel been staying there for last 15 year staff always helpful food lovely pool area big and spacious. Always find a bed by pool even in buzy times does need a freshen up in rooms which I think is happening in 2027 already booked up ready Just would like to know when it be closed for renovations just incase it’s time we there and how long be closed for too Please keep all staff they are lovely
As soon you step inside the Don Miguel a warm welcome awaits you. The rooms are very clean, and a lot over look the pool area, where you can sit of an evening and listen to a singer or disco. The pool area is always kept very clean and the good thing here is you can not get a bed until 9 am. We were half board and found the very food very good, plenty to chose from, and lovely desserts, and staff very helpful and friendly, and will always find you a table outside to sit when the are able to..
We've stayed at the Hotel Don Miguel many times over the last few years.
We stayed here this time for 7 nights half board (breakfast and dinner, drinks not included)
We like the hotel, it has a good feel to it.
It's a very busy & often full occupancy hotel, which must be a great plus for Servatur Hotels & Resorts. We love the adults only concept. The cleanliness of the hotel everywhere is good. The food is always good and the staff are helpful and friendly (Patrick is very friendly)
Some of the guests staying here on this occasion were VERY loud. They just couldn't talk or engage in a conversation at a normal volume level. We have no problem at all with people having a laugh & a giggle (in this life & whilst on holiday, we're not party poopers) but they took it literally to another level completely, where it impacted upon other guests (with zero consideration & no self awareness)
Nice spacious rooms & bathrooms, although we would say the bathrooms in particular would now benefit from a renovation (The hotel is due to be fully renovated in 2027, which we believe is definitely due)
Overall a good hotel, great location and good food, lots of options at the buffet for a 3 star Hotel. The A la Carte Restaurant in the bar is a nice touch too if you're bored of the buffet (you can book this once during your stay)
Our main observation is that some areas of the hotel now require a renovation. Built in 1974 & acquired by Riu Hotels & Resorts in 1990, it was then partially renovated, followed by another partial Renovation in 2012. The hotel was then sold to Servatur Hotels & Resorts in 2021 The Hotel is now due a complete & full renovation in 2027. It's sadly becoming a little run down in some areas now.
We just hope they don't remove some of the amenities when it's refurbished, like the fridges in the rooms & the free safe.
We had a couple of problems in our room whilst we stayed here. The ceiling fan broke, as did the shower head & both were fixed & replaced straight away.
Here are my pointers both positive ✅️ & negative ❌️
Great ✅️
✅️ Clean throughout. ✅️ Great Housekeeping (Everything is always restocked & cleaned) ✅️ Large rooms ✅️ Comfortable beds ✅️ Great breakfast (proper back bacon!) ✅️ Good food selection ✅️ Good bar service and great drinks ✅️ Good Gym/Fitness centre ✅️ Good swimming pool...temperature good (Warm enough to swim comfortably) ✅️ Great location ✅️ Pool towels ✅️ Good WiFi ✅️ Great Air Conditioning ✅️ Lovely atmosphere throughout ✅️ A great 3 star rated option ✅️ Great value overall ✅️ Dining options of main Buffet & additional restaurant ✅️ Adults only ✅️ Safe in room included ✅️ Fridge in the room ✅️ Near the beach ✅️ By the shops ✅️ 'Pepa' the general manager is great, friendly & proactive
Needs improvement
❌️ Some balconies are crumbling/falling away & an area of the sunbathing area around the pool is blocked off ❌️ Bathrooms are Worn & old (see photos) ❌️ No toilets at the same level as the pool area ❌️ Requires a high wall built between the hotel & the road to screen out the road noise ❌️ Has a lot of wasted garden & grounds that are not utilised/used, including a whole level where shops used to be situated, lower down & facing the road
Top Tips... Bring a travel Iron and Travel Kettle if you require them. Book a superior pool view room.
We have been here 4 times (!!). Always satisfied. Now Servatur starts to look for new ways to earn extra money: ask for ice cubes (like to cool a bottle of champagne or to enjoy a drink on your balcony, YOU GET CHARGED for the ice!
Never been to a hotel in my home life where this basic service is not free. It was nice - but not gonna rebook Servatur Don Miguel again. It’s a question of principle!
