- H10 Playa Esmeralda

Situated directly on the beautiful sandy beach of Costa Calma on the island of Fuerteventura, this attractive hotel enjoys marvellous views over the Atlantic Ocean. It features 2 swimming pools, several bars and a restaurant. Various sports facilities and a beauty centre make it a perfect place to relax. The international airport of Fuerteventura is about 65 km away.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
The first time we stayed in Playa Esmerelda was around 25 years ago, and reading the reviews we wanted a relaxing chilled holiday, so we knew exactly what to expect. We booked a superior room on AI basis and our room couldn't have been more perfectly located as the first one from the lobby 2501. We found the food very varied at Breakfast, lunch & dinner in the restaurant ( we didn't eat in the pool bar) and the staff all very friendly , all the staff at the Blue bar in the lobby were really great and very accommodating. There are free water stations around the hotel where you can help yourself anytime day or night and fill up your water bottles, don't worry if you haven't one as they sell them for 4 euro. Music in the Blue bar is chilled and starts at 8pm, we didn't venture to the pool bar for late music as we were just there to chill down. If you are looking for the most relaxing holiday then I can't recommend Playa Esmerelda enough, if you are looking for fast food chains & karaoke bars then Costa Calma isn't for you, but it certainly ticked all the boxes for us
I would rate this hotel a decent 3.5/5. It is a good hotel overall and there’s lots of positives. The reception staff are fantastic, super helpful and friendly. The house keeping and ground maintenance staff are lovely. The pool area is really clean and the interiors of the rooms and communal areas are modern and spacious. They have turtles on the ground floor which are so fun to watch. However, there are some issues.
The sun bed reservation situation is one of the worst of any hotel I’ve ever stayed at. If you’re not down there by 8am, you will not find a sun bed. The lifeguarding staff are bizarre, they have no identifiable role save for placing wooden warning blocks indiscriminately on sun beds. On our last day, I came down at 7am to make the most of the time left before our flight. After going to grab a drink for less than 15 minutes at 9am (and having been sat in the lifeguard areas line of sight for 2 hours!) one of their ‘don’t reserve sun beds’ blocks had been put on my sun lounger. I understand they want to make an example of people but I was clearly using the sun bed - my book was even left open. The male lifeguard then spent the remainder of the day staring me down as if I were a criminal, which left me feeling very unsettled and ruined the end of my stay. The lifeguards place the blocks randomly on any sun bed without someone sat there in that moment, no thought or common sense at all. No idea what purpose the blocks are meant to serve in any event as they are simply moved or thrown on the floor by most guests. They need to find a workable procedure to address the issue as they know it’s a big problem but the blocks are not a good solution. Perhaps simply increase the number of sun beds available? One positive about the sun beds is that they all have umbrellas/ parasols which is rare in the canaries and was nice to have.
The food is not bad. There’s quite a few vegetarian options which is a huge improvement from when I visited a H10 in Lanzarote in 2021 (where there was nothing at all). Although, the restaurant is very small and save for the pizza restaurant (which you get once per weekly stay) and the snack bar, options are limited. The chefs/ serving staff are very pleasant in the restaurant. The bar and waiting staff are not the best but they are rushed off their feet. Getting a drink during dinner is hard work - we waited on occasions over 15 minutes just to get a coke or water. Some of the bar staff in the snack bar are also pretty rude, probably owing to being so so busy. I was pregnant during my visit and wanted to double check a cocktail didn’t contain alcohol, the staff in the snack bar made me feel like an inconvenience to them.
Like all H10s, they charge you for a lot. The safe is €18 and towel changes are charged. The coffee bar is not included, advertised as if it is but is also separately charged for.
Evening entertainment is poor/ non existent and whilst that didn’t bother me, it’s something to consider if you like entertainment.
Overall, this is not a bad hotel but if you’ve been used to some of the bigger H10s or big RUIs, you’ll be disappointed. I would recommend it if you like a smaller hotel but be prepared for sun bed gate every morning and a real mixed bag on the service. I did raise these issues during my stay but I saw no improvement or change.
We enjoyed this hotel. The staff are friendly and work hard. The rooms are clean and well presented. We enjoyed the food with a good variety each day. The only area that let it down a little was the pool area. People do reserve sun loungers, they shouldn't but actually the hotel is short of sun loungers, there are gaps round the pool area and also some of the loungers there are looking quite shabby, with the odd broken or dirty lounger etc. If the hotel added about 20 loungers to the pool area they wouldn't have the issues they have at the moment. Most hotels have spare loungers that can be lifted out, not this hotel. You see people walking round at about 11am without a hope of finding an empty lounger. If you have a rule enforce it. Don't just slip a little wooden block onto an empty lounger! All in all a lovely holiday and the hotel was good. Happy to go again.
The hotel was lovely. It was peaceful and relaxing. We found everything to be clean and well maintained. The food was very good, varied and tasty. We found the staff to be helpful and friendly. Our main criticism would be the location. You are completely isolated. There are no amenities or shops nearby. There is nowhere of any interest within walking distance at all. We felt that had we known about the location we would not have booked a holiday here.
I stayed as a party of six for 7 nights, booking two superior rooms and one twin room.
Overall, we had a good holiday and there were plenty of positives. The hotel is clean, well maintained, and in a great location.
The issues we experienced didn't spoil our holiday, but I would think twice about returning.
The main disappointment was the all-inclusive experience, which I found underwhelming for a 4 star hotel.
The all inclusive felt very restricted and largely centred around the opening hours of the main buffet restaurant.
Outside of the restaurant, there were no self service food or drink facilities apart from water stations.
The pool bar food service was particularly disappointing. Rather than being able to help yourself, everything had to be ordered, often resulting in long waits. The food quality was inconsistent and generally below expectations. Unfortunately, on one occasion I had to return a dish due to it being seriously undercooked. We eventually stopped using the pool bar for food midway through the holiday. The drinks service was however good.
The main restaurant was also somewhat of a let down and did not provide a particularly relaxed dining experience. All the food is cleared promptly at 2130 hours.
The atmosphere often felt more like a canteen opposed to a 4 star hotel restaurant. Food trays frequently took too long to be replenished, and there were often lengthy waits for freshly cooked dishes.
All inclusive snack options outside the restaurant were limited. The only included snack outside the restaurants, on the all inclusive option was the "cake of the day" from Mike's Coffee Bar, which unfortunately appeared to be the same baked tart throughout the week. Aside from that, the only other all inclusive option available was a small selection of cookies.
I also found some of the additional charges surprising. Random scanning of the all inclusive wristbands felt unnecessary and inconsistent, and I cannot remember the last time I stayed in a 4 star hotel and had to pay extra for use of the room safe.
Pool towel exchanges are limited to one complimentary change, with additional exchanges charged at €2 each.
Another issue was the shortage of sun beds. There are clearly not enough for the number of persons staying at the hotel, which inevitably leads to people reserving beds early morning and not using them until much later in the day. This became a daily frustration.
The rooms, cleanliness, location and general upkeep were all very good.
The all inclusive felt restrictive, particularly when it came to food availability outside restaurant hours. Combined with the additional charges and ongoing sun bed issues, I’m not sure I would return.
Good points • Clean rooms and well maintained public areas with attractive décor. • Clean indoor and outdoor pools. • Comfortable beds. • Stromboli restaurant was excellent. (one complimentary visit included) • Great location close to a lovely beach. • Good drinks service.
Negatives • Underwhelming all inclusive. • Inconsistent food quality and slow service. • Poor pool bar food experience. • No self-service food or drinks outside the main restaurant (apart from water). • Very limited snacks and refreshments available during the day. • Additional charges for amenities that arguably should be included for a 4 star hotel. • Restaurant atmosphere lacked ambience. • Not enough sun beds.
We all genuinely had a good holiday, and I accept a lot is based on personal choice / expectations
