ELEGANCE AND SEA ACCESS... classic, sophisticated, gourmet cuisine, direct sea access, views, quality service, spa, healthclub, free Wi-Fi...
The Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see at the foot of The Cliff Bay... Perched on the top of a natural promontory, the hotel is surrounded by gardens - with innumerable secluded corners and centenary palm trees extending to the very edge of the cliff face. The panorama is completed by a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal to the east of the hotel.
This 5 star hotel, one of Porto Bay Hotels premium resorts, assures that every single little detail has been carefully conceived to present genuine peace, well-being and elegance. In the hotel's sea access area one can combine the Atlantic Ocean breeze with the spell-binding views when choosing the new pontoons and solariums.
The most influential restaurant guide in the world, the Michelin Guide, has awarded the Il Gallo d'Oro, The Cliff Bay's gourmet restaurant, run by Chef Benoît Sinthon, with a star. This is Madeira's first and only star.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
No doubt the best hotel in Madeira, everything from the rooms and view, to the staff and food is absolutely perfect,
We had a very pleasant stay at The Cliff Bay in Funchal. We were lucky with our room, which had not only the booked balcony with a view towards Funchal, but also a second balcony facing the sea, large enough for sun loungers. A real bonus.
The hotel itself is in great shape. What we liked most was the calm and unhurried atmosphere. It feels pleasantly quiet and relaxed, which made our stay especially enjoyable. The location on the cliff is excellent, with wonderful views over Funchal and the sea.
We also enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Rose Garden restaurant. Breakfast was another highlight, especially sitting on the restaurant’s lovely patio. Unfortunately, the Michelin-starred Il Gallo d'Oro was closed for renovations during our stay, so we did not have the opportunity to dine there.
We also enjoyed being able to walk into Funchal’s old town from the hotel, although it takes around 30–40 minutes each way.
This was our second stay, the first being in 2012. The general setup has remained largely unchanged, which we appreciated, while the hotel has clearly been successfully refurbished and brought up to date.
We would definitely come back to The Cliff Bay. For us, it is the combination of the peaceful atmosphere, the location and those beautiful views that makes the hotel such a lovely place to stay.
The location is superb! The views are amazing and the proximity to the city is really good. The rooms were very spacious and welcoming. I did not like that the king rooms are actually two mattresses pushed together. The Cliff bar was great. The main restaurant was closed. Anita was very good. The Rose was also good. If we had it to do again, I would eat all dinners in local highly rated restaurants. That said, the breakfast was amazing every day. The staff was very helpful and kind. Loved the pool areas and enjoyed jumping into the ocean! Overall, I would love to come back and stay here again.
We had such a memorable time! The first impressions are unforgettable ! Well come back again ext tame
Great location, good size rooms spotlessly clean though I would say dated in style, decor. Friendly peaceful atmosphere ample seating space throughout the hotel grounds and pool areas. Staff are helpful, friendly and professional. Great selection of bars and resturants throughout the hotel all delivering a high quality offering. Our 2nd visit and we hope to return for a 3rd visit. A big shout out to Roshan who works in the lobby bar first class service at all times.
