Just two minutes from Funchal's largest beach, Formosa Beach, lies Pestana Royal, an All-Inclusive only hotel which offers amazing views of the Cabo Girao hillside, and is just 10 minutes from Funchal city centre. The hotel offers transportation to Funchal city, courtesy of the hotels (subject days and time table schedules as per units program, “first come, first served” basis).
During your stay, you can lounge by the two swimming pools that the hotel has to offer as well as a Solarium. The children can enjoy their time at the hotel's kids club or in the playground, whereas there are plenty of activities for the adults to partake in such as Pool, Mini Golf or Tennis. There are four restaurants to spend your evening meal, three being a set menu and one open buffet.

Italian theme restaurant in Pestana Royal
the Italian Theme restaurant was a nice place for something out of routine buffet. Nice plates, with various veggie dishes. The most important is they are all delicious!

Lovely hotel, dreadful entertainment
The hotel itself, the hotel staff, and the food, all fabulous. I would come back if it was all this good. Unfortunately the "animation" team are not animated, don't give a damn in fact. They are not interested in making the guests' experience better. They appear apathetic and borderline lazy. I know this sounds rude, but when you announce an activity as "in 15 minutes we will start X activity, join us", then make no attempt to drum up interest, and then don't make further announcements, and actually then leave and don't run the activity because "no-one turned up"... I mean, come on!!! Other disappointments were that there was meant to be family table tennis, tennis, and football... when I asked about it, they said sorry but a guest booked the court/table when we were scheduled to play!!!!! I chose this hotel as it said there was entertainment for the kids (and evening entertainment - every day it was scheduled til 11pm and everyday they stopped at 10pm and then the only bar open was in silence until closing, no atmosphere. Boring). In fairness, one or 2 of the entertainment team were enthusiastic (a guy with a ponytail and a blonde lady), but the others ruined our experience and I will not be coming back here.

Beautiful setting, but not the 5-star experience we expected
The Pestana Royal is in a lovely location with attractive grounds, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The pool area was pleasant, although the pool is not very large and felt crowded at times.
Unfortunately, we were disappointed overall. For the price we paid, the hotel did not feel like a 5-star property. The rooms are tired and dated, and our bathroom was particularly disappointing. There were no USB ports, no mini fridge, and the kettle had to be used on the floor because there was nowhere sensible to plug it in.
The food was the biggest letdown. We had heard so much about the wonderful food in Madeira, but we certainly did not experience that here. The quality was poor and felt very cheap. If this hotel is meant to represent Madeira’s food, it is a very bad ambassador. Thankfully, we ate well in restaurants in Funchal, which made us regret booking all inclusive.
There were plenty of drinks options, but the quality was consistently poor. The worst Margarita I have ever had! Even the coffee was undrinkable.
Overall, the setting and staff were good, but they could not make up for the dated accommodation and disappointing food and drinks. It was very poor value for money and not somewhere we would return to.
Run down old hotel with lots of problems
Today is the 15th July if you are coming soon just be aware there is no Aircon no mini golf. The place is dated and the food is not great and very repetitive. The tennis courts are broken the table tennis is old as hell. The reception seems to be always over run as everything you book has to go through them and checking in and out. And never enough staff. This a 3 star hotel not 5 The free bus to Funchal is the only positive I have because it means I'm not in the hotel. The staff were helpful and friendly Maybe this was a nice hotel 30 years ago but I would never go back and I don't think They care.

Lovely stay
Just got back from Pestana Royal after a 7 day stay 28th June - 5th July 2026. We had a lovely stay and couldn’t rate the staff here any higher, especially Masum Ahmed in the restaurant. He was always polite with a smile on his face and asking if we had had a pleasant day and making sure we always had a drink. We did have a problem with the mattress on one of the beds, it had a huge dip in the middle, but as soon as we rang reception they changed it. Excellent service. Always plenty of sun beds available at all times of the day. Sun beds couldn’t be reserved, which makes a refreshing change. We never had any problems getting one, even if we had been out of the hotel and didn’t get back until after lunch. The only thing that did annoy me very slightly was the pool towel changing. You were supposed to leave your pool towels in your room and they would be changed when your room was cleaned. All well and good if you didn’t need them that day, but sometimes our room didn’t get cleaned until well after lunch so no clean pool towels. I did ask the pool bar staff and in the Spa, but they all told me I needed to leave them in our room and they would be changed. Maybe a better system needs putting in place where you can change them as and when required. Only a small issue and definitely didn’t spoil our stay. Free courtesy bus is good, dropping off and picking up from Funchal. Nice coastal path in front of the hotel. We did walk back from Funchal one afternoon. It was a pleasant walk and took us about an hour. The coastal path the other way takes you to a lovely little fishing village. A lovely stay.
