When you choose a luxury hotel, make sure it excels in every way. The Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort, formerly the LTI – Pestana Grand Hotel in Funchal, is a truly spectacular venue. This beautifully designed five star hotel features awe inspiring views out over the ocean, and gives holidaymakers plenty of wonderful vantage points to appreciate the azure blue sea.
As well as its own amenities and attractions, the Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort is your stepping off point into Funchal, Madeira's capital city. Visitors flock to Funchal for its excellent and diverse shopping, its historical sites (including the Santa Clara Convent and Sé Cathedral) and the insight they afford into old Madeira. Gourmands will enjoy a trip to the old town in the west, with its many excellent restaurants.
The sea dominates views from the Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort, but the hotel is a landmark in its own right. Set in rich, tropical gardens, it has the look and feel of a luxury hotel – and once you're here, you'll have no choice but to give in to the relaxing holiday lifestyle.
Views from each of the hotel's 177 rooms are suitably amazing. Just getting up in the morning and gazing out over the sea is a great way to start the day. All rooms maintain the five star feeling, with excellent furnishings and subtle colours emphasising the space. All are equipped with cable TV, phone, hairdryer, mini-bar, tea/coffee facilities. Room upgrades are available at a supplement.
With so much to do in Funchal, as well as right here at the hotel, you may have to mix and match your activities. But this really is one of those occasions when time at your hotel really is time very well spent. Both the large outdoor saltwater pool and the Jetstream indoor pool really have to be experienced. There is a well-equipped games room and gym – and for the ultimate indulgence, a relaxing massage is available.
And talk of a day well spent inevitably leads us to the four hotel restaurants – try to sample a little something from each before you go! The hotels main restaurant is a buffet restaurant which serves breakfast and dinner. Other restaurants are subject to reservation locally.
There isn't really anything on a par with the Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort. It's superior outlook, accommodation and amenities make it the ultimate destination in the heart of Madeira.
Although this hotel enjoys a most spectacular and scenic location on the top of the Ponta da Cruz headland overlooking the ocean, it is within walking distance of the sophisticated attractions of Funchal. Set in a beautiful tropical garden which features a large saltwater swimming pool, there is access to a promenade to allow guests to walk beside the sea.
Spacious, clean, opulent. Wonderful facilities - easy for different family members to do different things. Great range of delicious food. Superb staff - friendly, professional and personable. We had a brilliant stay as a family - thanks to all the staff!
We were disappointed with our stay, which didn’t meet 5‑star expectations. While our suite was spacious with excellent views and the staff were friendly, the hotel struggled in several key areas. The beds were uncomfortable, the shower temperature fluctuated dangerously, and the bar was clearly understaffed.
Food quality was poor with very limited options, meaning we often ate out despite paying for full board. Many families were also unhappy with the lack of choices for children. We did not find the photos on here matched our experience. As the week went on, the resort became busier and the hotel couldn’t cope — breakfast frequently had empty items, and you had to track down staff to get basics replenished.
Overall the service and facilities fell far short of what a 5‑star property should deliver.
If you want a lively holiday, then the Pestana Grand isn’t for you. It’s quiet, with a relaxed atmosphere and more suited to couples, than families with young children. Yes, it’s a distance from Funchal, but there are plenty of buses available that go in that direction. There is a small shopping mall just up the hill from the hotel which includes a decent supermarket. The staff in the hotel are friendly and welcoming. As some other reviewers mentioned, the bars are understaffed. However, I never waited more than 5 minutes for service. During meal times, the staff are very attentive and groundskeeping/housekeeping staff are always busy cleaning etc throughout the day. There’s no doubt that the hotel needs updating in places. There are lots of signs of wear and tear throughout the hotel. The rooms are looking tired and it is definitely not 5 star. However, the staff keep it immaculately clean and looking the best it can. Our generously sized room had an amazing view which was certainly worth the little extra we paid. One issue was that smoking seems to be allowed on all balconies, which did affect our enjoyment of our balcony a little as other residents’ fumes drifted in our direction. Also, as many others have mentioned, the mattresses are pretty uncomfortable! We stayed on a half board basis and were honestly very pleased with the choice on offer at breakfast and dinner. There were plenty of dishes to try and food was regularly replenished. We experienced no significant wait times for food. However, If you’re expecting chicken nuggets and chips you will be disappointed! The pool was good ( though showing some signs of wear and tear) and there were always plenty of sun loungers available. Again, the atmosphere around the pool was relaxed, with music only being played next to the bar. There was entertainment on in the bar area every evening, but this wasn’t generally to our taste and was a little boring. We did enjoy the traditional dancing during dinner though.
Would we return? Probably. Nothing we experienced was unexpected, having read the reviews before booking. I was happy with the standard of the hotel for the price we paid and really enjoyed our holiday.
Our stay at the Pestana Grand Premium Hotel exceeded our expectations. The location was ideal for promenade walks, shopping and restaurants, although we didn’t use these as meals at the hotel were excellent, plenty of variety and very well presented. All staff were very attentive and professional. It’s worth paying extra for a sea view room which was spacious with complimentary drinks in the fridge. The gardens were very colourful and immaculately maintained. We will definitely visit this hotel again.
Cool experience and a nice place
