We have just returned from a 7 night stay at the Girassol Suite Hotel and can not fault any aspect of our holiday. We travelled as a family of three and enjoyed all inclusive accommodation in a junior suite. Upon arrival at the hotel, the reception staff greeted us warmly and explained every aspect of the stay to us including meal times, the pool towel system and local tourist taxes to name but three.
The food was great and there was plenty of it, always something to choose and was regularly refreshed and hot! Breakfast was the standout meal with lots of choice, lunch was very nice as was dinner. We ended up eating all of our meals (bar one when we were in Funchal at lunchtime) in the hotel so that tells you something!
Service in the restaurant and bar areas was very friendly with all staff attentive and polite. The AI drinks in the bar in the evening were fine, but avoid the cocktails as they are pre-mixed and sometime tasted a little off.
While the room decor is a little tired (as is noted by other reviewers) the beds were comfortable, towels are changed on request and everything is clean. The communal areas appear to have been modernised more recently and are also clean and tidy.
The location of the hotel could not be better. Even though it is on a main road, the noise in the rooms is non-existent and you benefit from the flat walk to the bus stop for a short ride into Funchal Old Town (buses 1, 2, 4 and 105 are the ones to take - all terminate near the cable car station). The Lido is very near and walkable as the multitude of bars and restaurants near the hotel. There are also a couple of shopping centres (small tourist shops for mementoes) and a main supermarket (Pingo Doce) nearby as well as lots of ATM's.
As for Madeira and Funchal, this was our first visit and we found the island to be very picturesque and friendly. The cable car to Monte is a must, as is the toboggan back down the hill (just don't get caught out be the ticket touts which will accost you on the way to the lower cable car station). The Monte Palace gardens and the whale watching boat trips are also highly recommended.
Wow! We knew the hotel had lovely reviews but were still pleasantly surprised at how lovely the hotel is. We stayed as bed and breakfast so can't speak for all inclusive offerings. We were on the 10th floor with a view of both the sea and the hills, gorgeous morning sun and stunning views of the full moon over the sea.... The hotel is well connected to Funchal by the very regular bus services (001 and 002). The staff were wonderful and so kind to our children. There are tonnes of restaurants nearby (we especially liked the Thai and Frango Da Guiia. All good within the vicinity is of great value. So were the drinks at the hotel bar. We were prewarned by Jet2 of some local building works but weren't bothered by it at all. All in all it was a brilliant trip and we would highly recommend.
Went to Hotel Girassol as my 80th birthday celebration with my wife, our children and grandchildren, a total of 20 people covering 3 generations. For our first evening meal, the hotel arranged the table in a “u” shape with me at the head, and provided a birthday cake and champagne. The senior managers and chef made us very welcome. A very good start to a very good all inclusive 10 day holiday. Food at all meals is served buffet style with quick fresh hot items replaced quickly as the food trays became depleted ensuring guests did not have to wait. This applied both in the restaurant and the pool side lunch service. Staff were quick to clear used crockery between courses without being intrusive. Staff also brought wine and other drinks from the bar. The food itself was well presented and very tasty, and varied each day with perhaps a Greek or Italian theme, but I enjoyed the Madeirian dishes most, well done chef! Rooms were well sized including a separate lounge and balcony, cleaned daily and good order. The public areas were clean, attractive and had a good atmosphere . The two pools and surrounding areas were well designed and were maintained and well cared for by the pool attendants . Overall we felt well looked after by welcoming and attentive staff.
Great hotel with perfect location. Breakfast was amazing and kept us going until lunch. We had everything in the room we needed and staff were helpful when we needed their help with noisy neighbours. The staff were friendly and helpful. Food was nice but quite expensive however drinks were fairly priced. Spa was lovely and massage was very good.
Room were clean & spacious. Friendly enough place. Won’t agree with 4 star. Food limited & never very hot. No facilities to shower for late flights home. Location’s good.
