This charming hotel in the centre of Funchal enjoys a unique vintage style design, with furnishing from the 1960s and large-scale black and white photos of famous movie scenes on the walls. It features a restaurant with terrace, a bar with garden and an outdoor pool on the top floor with views over the ocean and the bay of Funchal. The old town, the cathedral and the marina are only a few steps away. Free wifi is available in all areas of the hotel
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
I've stayed in this hotel in it's previous guise (Hotel do Carmo) many times over the years and was a little nervous about going back after the revamp with all the changes.
I shouldn't have been.
On arrival there was a little mistake with the room allocation, but this was very quickly resolved and the room type I'd booked was quickly sorted after multiple apologies and after that everything was perfect.
Yes, the hotel has lost the 60s charm it previously had, but the same amazing, friendly staff who have greeted me with a beaming smile over the years are still there just as welcoming and friendly as ever. The quality of service and cleanliness is just as good, if not better and the one thing that let them down, air conditioning has now arrived.
I'll definitely be back again on my next visit
Recommend this hotel, very friendly staff and nice spacious room. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. Located slighty away from the centre but an easy walk to most sights. Supermarket a few mins away also
The hotel is very central to all the main areas in Funchal, which makes it easy to get about and see the sights. Good breakfast and room was good. Swimming pool and gym on site
Positives - great central location, clean and well equipped rooms, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff (particularly reception), value for money and a decent breakfast. Areas for improvement - we found the noise early in the morning and late at night an issue, breakfast staff seemed either under-staffed or maybe add some more equipment to help them (extra toaster, double up on milk stations etc), evening restaurant never had any guests in the seven nights we were there - couldn't find a menu online or on display at the hotel which was a bit weird
I wanted to be fairly close to central Funchal, not in a hotel a long way out & this hotel was pretty good Quiet side street, mostly local area - loved the walk in shower & buffet breakfast was fine
