Exceptional hotel, outstanding staff
This is a quite exceptional hotel in a perfect location. It is worthy of a 5 star review in every respect - the sheer quality of the rooms, the cleanliness, the food, the facilities… everything. The most important category of all is the staff and they are truly outstanding. They take customer service and hospitality to another level because they quite obviously care and are very clearly part of a family run hotel that looks after its staff and its guests. Come for all the great qualities the Castanheiro has - and stay to be genuinely looked after. It’s the best.

Amazing Location
I Would highly recommend this hotel for its ideal location, friendly staff and excellent food. We had a fantastic holiday in Madiera and the hotel added to that experience. A big thank you to all the staff.

A perfect hotel for a memorable holiday
This hotel was absolutely fantastic and I cannot recommend it enough if you are wanting to holiday in Madeira!
We wanted to be in Funchal as most of the things we wanted to see and do were in the capital or close to it and Castanheiro is right in the centre. The buildings have been beautifully restored and the decor is amazing. As mentioned it’s very central but it’s not on a main thoroughfare so surprisingly quiet inside and on the roof and terrace etc which is what you want.
Features wise it has everything, good quality rooms, excellent staff, great food and plenty of facilities if you are having a “Hotel day”
We stayed in room 321 (no dusty bin tho !) and it was perfect, had a small kitchenette area which was ideal for making tea. We also had a balcony which was a nice spot to sit and relax after the day was done. Our building faced another building over the dining area terrace , but was still peaceful and the floors were not at the same levels , so you didn’t feel like other residents were adjacent.(not that lots of people were sitting out when we were anyhow)
The main restaurant is inside but there is an outside terrace (with parasols) which was lovely for breakfast! There is also a main bar which also has an outside terrace and lastly the whole roof has been transformed into a terraced area with swimming pool , loungers and a bar/restaurant for lunches etc.
In the lower level there is a full spa area with swimming pool , sauna and steam room. Also a full aromatherapy centre. (We used this on our last day and it was extremely relaxing and I felt like I was floating on air after my facial lol )
There is a gym on an another lower level but who wants to exercise on holiday ?!
So so sum up, Castanheiro is a beautiful and stylish hotel, perfectly situated for your holiday ( pick up points for our day trips were a 2 min walk ) with all the facilities you would expect from a boutique hotel.
Absolutely faultless! All the staff were super friendly and helpful which just makes it 100%.

Good hotel in great location
Fabulous location if you want to be close to the bustle and restaurants of the Old Town without actually being in said bustle. Just a few metres from the municipal square and the cathedral. Decent room with balcony but the balcony was on a busy street overlooked by offices, so we didn't use it a lot. The rooftop and pool were great with nice beer and cake up there. Breakfast was fine. Enough variety for a few days but the service mixed..often left standing for a few minutes before being spotted and shown to a table. Maid service was fine and room clean but didn't always replenish the coffees/ teas. Staff at the front desk very friendly and helpful. We would definitely use this hotel again in the future if we return to Funchal.

Perfect stay in fabulous hotel and city
Perfect stay. Hotel was ideally situated to enjoy Funchal. Location was quiet. loved every aspect of the hotel , staff, room, restaurant, roof pool and bar. Staff were attentive and efficient.
