This apartment hotel boasts a prime location on a steep slope overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, offering magnificent views over the sea, the fishing village and the surrounding mountainous landscape. This establishment in Prazeres, in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, provides an excellent base for hiking. Nature lovers will find a nature reserve just 2 kilometres away from the hotel and Madeira airport is around a 50-minute drive away. This environmentally friendly hotel features a wide choice of different accommodation options to suit all guests' needs. Ranging from the comfortable studios to the charming bungalows, they all come fully-equipped to provide all the necessary services and facilities. There is a cosy café where to share moments with the family and an à la carte restaurant specialising in vegetarian food. Conference facilities are also available for business travellers.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
We never stayed at this hotel but we did eat here several times as we could walk from our nearby air bnb. We loved it! They have a lovely outdoor patio and also a solarium area inside for café style dining. It’s a different menu than the dining room. Everything we tried was excellent. Service was quick and the waitress was pleasant and polished.
We stayed at this hotel in February 2020 for a week and had a great holiday in the Winter sunshine. The room was spacious & well equipped (albeit a bit dated). The views were simply incredible as all you could see was the Sea and the Sky. The hotel had a nice outdoor swimming pool & a small, but adequate heated indoor pool. There was a tennis court, Badminton court and games room. The evening entertainments was dull, dated and disappointing. This alleged 4* hotel should really only be a 3* at best, as the food was Very poor & lacked imagination. I understand that the kitchen manager strives to cut costs wherever possible, but we will not stay here again because of the quality of the food, most of which was precooked and little was fresh. Shame really, as the location was stunning, but the restaurant left us disappointed.
The staff at this hotel were excellent. The location high on the clifftop is superb. Breakfast is full international They run 'open seating for breakfast and dinner. Dinner is buffet style - the choice is very good. They have an indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Car parking by the hotel is difficult but there is a good parking area about 300m up the hill. Our biggest problem was the lack of air conditioning anywhere in the hotel. I think this is unacceptable in a modern hotel in 2023. It was hot - 34C+ in the day and the south-facing rooms get very hot in the afternoon. Reception suggested we leave the patio doors open when sleeping!!
I like this hotel. Yes, the decor is a bit dated, but so what; the rooms are large, warm in appearance and comfortable, which is also "dated" when you think about it. The staff are friendly and knowledgable. The location is spectacular and quiet. You are so far above the sea, you can't even really hear it, but you get some stunning sunsets.
A car is almost a must, unless you are planning to do nothing, or just hike in the immediate area (which is entirely possible). The food ranges from good to okay, but the buffets have many options. Choose between indoor (heated) or outdoor pool. In warmer weather, the generous patio would be great. Parking is tight, but that's true just about everywhere in Madeira.
One caveat: our mattress was very firm – much too firm for me (my wife was okay with it). My solution was to take one of the wool blankets, fold it and place it under the sheet, which helped a little.
We had such a wonderful time staying at Hotel Jardim do Atlântico for two weeks during the Christmas holidays! It’s in the peaceful Prazeres area, and there are plenty of hiking trails to explore. Whether you’re up for the tough Paul do Mar stair descent and climb back up, or you prefer the easy but fun levada walks nearby, there’s something for everyone. The views are spectacular! The hotel’s food was delicious and had something for everyone’s palate. The staff at the desk were always so helpful, and our rooms were always nicely made up each day. As locals, we decided to treat ourselves to a peaceful staycation and we were so happy with our choice. Thanks so much for making our stay so memorable!
