Set in the heart of the Algarve’s vibrant town of Lagos, Tivoli Lagos is a charming resort-style hotel offering a blend of Portuguese character and comfort. Designed like a traditional Algarve village, its whitewashed buildings and cobbled paths create a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The hotel is just a short stroll from Lagos’ historic centre, where guests can explore shops, cafés, and local landmarks, while the golden sands of Meia Praia beach are easily reached via a complimentary shuttle service in the summer months.
Tivoli Lagos offers a variety of facilities, including an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers and a terrace, as well as a seasonal indoor pool and a wellness centre with massage services, sauna, and a fitness room. Guests can enjoy a range of dining options, from relaxed poolside snacks to regional Portuguese cuisine.
Guestrooms are decorated in a classic style, each with air conditioning, a balcony or terrace, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, and a private bathroom with a hairdryer. Upgraded rooms and suites offer extra space and enhanced comfort, some with views across the gardens or pool area.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
The location is fine short walk from Lagos old town which has a pleasant vibe with plentiful good quality restaurants. The atmosphere in the hotel is pretty non existent everyone seems to do their own thing not overly friendly. Bus to the beach works well which is nice beach even though the sea is a bit chilly. I found the bar staff around the pool and in the bar itself pleasant enough and friendly. The room was just ok not sure it’s 4 star, the whole hotel is a bit shabby and tired and in need of renovating. My main gripe was having £100 in cash disappear from my room. Should have locked it in the safe and was too trusting, my bad. When I reported it to the management they assured me it could not be their loyal and long serving staff who obviously had access to our rooms for cleaning etc, no one else does! I advised them £100 in £20 notes do not sprout legs and just disappear. Draw your own conclusions. Apart from that our stay was just ok nothing special. The gym was adequate for holiday use, the sauna average and indoor pool ok. Would not go back there but Lagos old town is great.
Check in was fine. Most staff are pleasant. Hotel is spread out and is a maze to finding your room in certain blocks. Many areas of the hotel not cleaned well. We saw hair on the steps leading to our room every day and encountered a cockroach in the bathroom. Staff apparently unable to find alternative room, until we were adamant about not staying in the room with the cockroach. Then miraculously a room was found. Management told us cockroaches were a part of living in a warm climate and couldn’t be controlled or completely eradicated. One Hotel bar woman was unfriendly and quite rude. Breakfast buffet was good. Evening buffet very average and disappointing.
Loved the overall stay at the resort, great staff - super nice and friendly! The location was excellent - we walked into the old town daily for 10 nights - just about 5-6 minutes to the old town with beautiful streets. tons of restaurants and shops. We dined at the La Terrazza one evening and it was excellent service and very tasty food, the total vibe was very cozy and charming at the evening. We've also visited the Dune beach - super easy access by taking the shuttle bus from the hotel, the beach was really nice and we also dined at the Dune restaurant with great tasty food and great service. We'd definately come back again one day for another trip.
This resort was a disappointment. While the location was wonderful and the breakfast outstanding, the customer service was not what I would expect at a 4-star resort. The front desk, bar and pool bar staff were not friendly and often made us feel uncomfortable. I was not even able to get an ice cube from the bar and was told I had to order a bucket as room service. We were in Lagos during a heat wave and the water station at the front was rarely filled and often no clean glasses. We felt like we were an inconvenience when we asked for a glass. I am certain that for the price we paid we could have found accommodations in Lagos with much more welcoming staff. This really took away from our Algarve experience.
Very disappointing experience — would not stay here again
Honestly, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Unfortunately, the biggest issue was the staff, who were consistently unkind and unfriendly throughout our stay. If you’re looking for a hotel where you feel welcomed, accommodated, and taken care of, I would not recommend staying here.
One experience in particular was extremely frustrating. I had something delivered to the hotel that I needed for medical reasons. Before placing the order, I specifically confirmed with the front desk that I could have it delivered to the hotel, and I was told that this was okay. When the delivery arrived, however, the delivery person was turned away and I was later told that it was “against hotel policy.” What made this even more frustrating was that the package had actually been received and was sitting in the back of the hotel the entire time. Thankfully, one employee eventually helped me locate it and was the only person who showed any kindness or willingness to assist during the situation.
The hotel itself is also very confusingly laid out. It took us about 10 minutes just to figure out how to get to our room. If you have any difficulty with stairs, walking, or mobility, I would strongly recommend choosing another hotel, as navigating the property can be quite difficult.
Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing. Between the unfriendly staff, lack of communication, confusing layout, and the way our situation was handled, I would not return. 1/10 — unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel.
