A fantastic family holiday with something for every generation
We recently stayed as a multigenerational family, ranging in age from just 4 months to 70 years, and overall had a wonderful holiday. There was plenty to suit everyone in our group, and the resort worked particularly well for a family trip.
There were lots of positives. The pools are beautiful, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, and we were particularly impressed with the two-bedroom apartment. There was a great variety of food available throughout the day, and the breakfast buffet had plenty of choice. We especially appreciated the amount of fresh fruit available, which isn’t always the case at all-inclusive resorts.
We upgraded to the Premium All Inclusive package and were very glad we did. The quieter premium breakfast was a real benefit, particularly when travelling with children, and the choice and quality of drinks included in the package was excellent. We also really enjoyed the à la carte steak restaurant.
The concierge team were very helpful with arranging excursions and taxis, and the offer of free tickets to local attractions was a lovely addition. The nearby beach and Alvor town were also easy to access and gave us plenty of options for days out with the children.
There are a few areas that could be improved. At breakfast, eggs and coffee could be quite slow to arrive and were sometimes cold. Anyone travelling with a pram or with reduced mobility should definitely request a ground-floor room, as this can make getting around considerably easier. We also had some minor issues such as lights being stuck on or off in our bathrooms and leaks through the floorboards which are easy fixes for the hotel to check and fix between guests.
The à la carte restaurants can also be difficult to book. As bookings only become available after arrival and we found we needed to book at least 48 hours ahead, this limits your options during the first few days of the holiday. The Italian restaurant was good for pizza, but we were less impressed by the other dishes. The service there also needs some improvement; we were forgotten about several times, and a two-course dinner took nearly two hours.
The absolute standout of our stay, however, was Anabela at the Premium breakfast. She consistently went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. She treated our children with such affection and care, even taking the time to teach them some Portuguese. What made her particularly special was her genuine friendliness and interest in us as people rather than simply guests to serve. With such a wide range of ages in our family, those thoughtful touches made a real difference. Her warmth, kindness and care were commendable and genuinely made our holiday even more special.
Overall, we had a lovely family holiday with many more positives than negatives. The pools, spacious accommodation, Premium package, food choices and location made it a great option for our multigenerational group, and Anabela is someone we will particularly remember from our stay.
Let down!!
I have stayed at the tivoli Alvor 7 times now and I can say that things are going down hill. We stayed for a week with my family, 6 adults and a baby and paid extra for the all inclusive premium, unfortunately the premium service isn’t worth the money. So when you arrive you are informed to use the hotel app for booking restaurants. When you try and book for your first night you are informed that there is no availability for this. Second day the same. Tried speaking with customer relations but was told they have no control over people booking reservations. If you come with a family and have different rooms you can only book for your room so you may not all be able to eat together as each room requires a separate booking. On arrival we were informed that one restaurant was now closed (mad med) as the hotel didn’t have enough staff . For premium drinks we asked for some branded spirits which were previously available on our last trip but were informed that they were not stocked, then asked for a simple drink ( Bloody Mary) again informed by staff that they are not allowed to make these drinks?. Going around the hotel there is 3 different bars but now there is notices stating that we only serve standard drinks but if you want a premium drink you can visit the bottom bar. Speaking with a few members of staff that I remember from previous visits they are all saying that the hotel isn’t staffed properly and they can’t offer the service they would like to. The hotel rooms are lovely and the grounds, swimming pools , it’s just such a pity that simple things let this hotel down. It has the potential to be fantastic but no one is prepared to take on board suggestions which would definitely improve customer experiences.

Lovely hotel but room for improvement to be 5*
Due to bad reviews recently we considered cancelling this holiday numerous times however I’m glad we didn’t.
The hotel grounds are lovely and well kept, pools are clean and there were plenty of Sunbeds at the normal pools at all times of the day, perhaps not the case in school holidays but we didn’t struggle in mid September, there were very little Sunbeds at the adults only pool past 10am however we did prefer the normal pools with some music and more atmosphere watching the entertainment but appreciate that’s not for everyone.
In terms of the food and drink we were premium all inclusive. We managed to book in the Italian on our first night albeit at half 9, there was availability at all resteraunts whilst we were there as we checked on our first day as recommended however the slots left were either really early at 6pm or much later slots at 9.30 definitely think premium guests should have more option and preference considering we paid extra to use the restaurants on site an unlimited amount of time and didn’t get to use this to full potential due to the timings left also mad med was closed on an evening which limited choice again. We did eat out 3 nights we were there which didn’t bother us too much as we had planned to venture out but for the price you pay to stay here you shouldn’t be expected to eat out and should have better options especially when paying premium.
Breakfast in mad med was nice for premium guests much less chaotic than the main buffet and the choice of an egg menu.
We ate at salty bar most lunch times which had burgers, hot dogs, crisps, salad and various continental selection probably one thing it lacks in comparison to other 5* hotels iv stayed at is a pool bar menu with things to order like pizzas and toasties if I had to be picky. Would be nice to have some chips on the buffet to go with your hot dog or burger in any case rather than crisps.
The premium cocktail menu we enjoyed and when watching staff make drinks always seemed to be premium spirits, you can definitely feel the drinks after a few which the same can’t be said for a lot of all inclusive hotel drinks as they’re often watered down but we didn’t find this at all here!
Shore bar was open the first few nights until 11pm which we enjoyed sitting in before going out or when we got back and was always busy however towards the end of our stay it was closed at 7pm and you had to sit in the entertainment tent, definitely think for a 5* hotel there should be more bar options on an evening, salty bar should also be open on an evening in my option as not everyone wants to watch or sit in the children’s entertainment and there is potential for 2 other bars to be open which could all have a different atmosphere to suit all needs and give your nights abit of variety.
All in all would I say don’t visit due to bad reviews no, maybe service would slip in school holidays if the hotel was full there is a lot of rooms which if are full with families I can imagine the hotel would extremely busy even though it’s large.
All in all the hotel in general is clean and has lovely grounds, food not 5* and we did go with expectation of eating out some nights so that didn’t dampen our holiday, drinks are good in my opinion and our room was clean and modern with no complaints at all. Is the hotel 5*? Probably not in comparison to other 5* I have stayed at in other countries it lacks a few special touches that make somewhere 5* and is more a 4*. Wouldn’t bother with premium upgrade if going for less than a week as standard all inclusive drink menu is ample and may not be able to benefit from all the restaurants anyway. Would we return, yes if the price was right but there probably are better hotels you can visit for a week in Greece, Spain and turkey for the same price.

My Experience
I absolutely loved my stay at this hotel! Everything was perfect, from the beautiful atmosphere to the excellent service. A special thank you to the amazing Mad Med team Antonio, Nicole, Daniel, Muhamad, Victoria, Anabela, and Sayana for being so friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout my stay. And a very special thank you to their wonderful supervisor, Elisabete, for leading such a fantastic team. The whole experience was truly wonderful. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a lovely and relaxing stay. ❤️

Overall we really enjoyed our stay here.
Positives:
Pool area and bars really clean. although the 'marquee' has got negative reviews we actually thought it was great for the kids with an ice cream cart, coffee and pastries and was great for the kids to run around on an evening without having to worry.
Drink selection is good. Room was nice however we did request a ground floor terrace room with easy access to the pool areas and we put in the furthest away block on the second floor (not great with 2 kids under 2 = 2 prams and copious stuff to haul). They did advise that these rooms were the deluxe family but we definitely would have preferred a ground floor room so was really disappointed in this.
Negatives:
wouldn't class either of the 2 al la carte's that were open as true al la carte. Buffet starters and desserts again which was disappointing. Food is average and didn't enjoy the main buffet for breakfast or tea.
We wouldn't visit again but i would definitely recommend for an easy relaxing holiday which was great for the kids with a shallow area in the pool.
Train into town was loved by all.
Overall we really enjoyed the stay but a little underwhelmed by the food that we did venture out and eat out.
I would also recommend they change the kids disco timings. 5.30pm is not a convenient time for young kids as this would be the time we would be heading up to get them dressed for dinner. A 7/7.30pm would be a better time i would imagine after kids have eaten.
