Good hotel, only let down is the food
The hotel is great.
The pool is huge. Sometimes in the middle of the day it can get a bit crowded but not often. Loads of space and sunbeams if that's your thing, but can be difficult to find some shade.
Rooms are large and comfortable, having a fridge in there was very handy. There are loads of beaches in the area, Alvor beach is outstanding and only 5 minutes away by car. (The hotel does have a bus as well).
The only real let down is the food. There are 2 restaurants but they have the same food and slightly different opening times, with the adults only one opening and closing a bit later. We were in the family restaurant and really the food ranged from not nice to tasteless. Breakfasts are fine. Lunch is saved by the chicken kebab they have running, but the rest of the cooked food was a big let down. There's no real description of what the different items are - Meat Salad, Fish Salad, Vegetarian are some of the descriptions.
I'd recommend the place but try to eat out in the evenings if you can!
An Honest Review of Our 10 Night, Family of 11 Stay
We stayed from 2nd–12th July as a family of 11, including two children.
The rooms were spacious, cleaned daily, with good-sized bathrooms and large balconies.
Before we arrived, we were a little apprehensive about the food after reading comments on Facebook. However, we all thought it was really good. There was plenty of choice every night, and even the picky eaters in our family found something they enjoyed. We especially loved the Saturday BBQ night – the steak was amazing! None of us became ill during our stay. I think people are often quick to blame the food when there can be plenty of other causes.
The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. A special mention to Anabela on reception, who was incredibly kind and accommodating. If you need anything during your stay, she’s definitely the person to ask.
The hotel is huge, and so is the pool. It never felt overcrowded, and there were plenty of sunbeds available, although, as you’d expect, it was harder to find one in the afternoon. Some people have commented that the pool is too cold, but we thought it was the perfect temperature for cooling off. I can understand why it might feel chilly on a windy day, but for us it was ideal. The lifeguards were excellent too. They made sure people actually used the sunbeds they reserved rather than leaving towels on them all day. One of the children in our family also cut her toe, and the lifeguard was incredibly helpful.
The daytime entertainment around the pool was good. The entertainment team encouraged people to join in without being pushy, which we really appreciated. The evening entertainment was very popular, so we could never really get a table, but it seemed to be aimed more at younger children anyway. We usually sat inside or around the back where there was always plenty of space. It was also nice that they showed the football during the World Cup.
The drinks were excellent – probably the best all-inclusive cocktails we’ve had. There was a great selection, and they certainly didn’t taste like paint stripper! There is a three-drink limit per person, although the queues could get a little long during the day when people were ordering coffees.
There’s also a handy little shop inside the hotel, with really friendly staff.
We used the shuttle bus to the beach one day, which runs every 30 minutes. It does drop you off on the roadside rather than directly at the beach, so we simply followed everyone else. Without that, we might have been a little lost! On the way back, the shuttle was running late, although we were told that’s not usually the case.
The local town of Alvor is around a 10–15 minute walk or a two-minute taxi ride away. It’s quite small but has plenty of lovely restaurants and bars to explore. Please avoid using uber as they will try and scam you!
Overall, we had a fantastic stay and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alvor Baía Resort to families. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!
Overall very good spot.
One weeks stay mid July with wife and two boys, 7&4. Good experience all round. Very clean and well kept hotel. Rooms are a good size with separate bedroom for adults and pull out sofa for kids. Food all week was very good. BBQ night was great but big queue for the excellent steak. Good selection all round with ok variety each night. Staff very friendly, hard working and attentive. Plenty of sun beds some obviously brand new. Kids club was not great. Kids complained it was very boring and were reluctant to go back after the first visit. Kids pool is quite basic compared to other hotels we’ve visited.
Great family hotel, brilliant entertainment staff and we will return!
We had a fantastic week at Alvor Baia. We're a family of 4 (kids are 8 and 4) and I couldn't fault a thing. Firstly, all of the staff were brilliant - really friendly and kind. The entertainment staff were especially fab and great with the kids. We became very attached to them by the time we left!
The mini disco was really sweet and my daughter loved joining in and learned all the moves by the end of the week - even learned some Portuguese from the songs, which was great! There was aqua-dancing in the pool with a great playlist (so much so I had to ask the staff for it so I could listen again at home!) and the pool party was always fun.
We had my daughter's 8th birthday there, and the staff did a shout-out to her at the pool party and got everyone to sing happy birthday to her, which was rather sweet. She loved it.
Our room was great, we were on the 1st floor. Plenty of space for the four of us, a big bathroom and plenty of room for suitcases etc. Great air con too.
Lots of variety with the food and always something to choose, regardless of your tastes.
Everything was clean, it was easy to get a sunbed, and it was a great family resort. The playground was at the end of the resort by the kids pool so was easy for the kids to travel between the two. They did a couple of activities at the kids club and really enjoyed them. The girl running it was brilliant with all the kids (and very tolerant!).
Even though it was busy, it didn't feel TOO busy. As the pool is massive, there was plenty of room for everyone, regardless of whether you wanted a swim, to relax on a lilo or throw a ball around. Plenty of room for all.
We got the bus to the beach one day and pottered into the town on our last day. The bus to the beach was great and on time.
Every member of staff we encountered was brilliant and really friendly. I can't fault a thing.
We will definitely return to Alvor Baia and highly recommend it. For the music, atmosphere and vibe alone!
Good hotel, average All Inclusive
Don't worry about negative reviews. You won't have a bad holiday for picking this hotel. There are just niggles that stop it being really good. The hotel itself is nice. Rooms are spacious and the aircon is genuinely good. The communal areas are nice, there's loads of space, no sunbed wars and it's really clean throughout. The staff are really helpful in all areas. Location is good between Alvor and Portimao, although if you're travelling with less mobile individuals there's nothing in the immediate vicinity so need taxis. The WiFi is patchy at best though and there's no excuse really. It's 2026.
The food at meal times swings from ok to really good depending on the nightly theme. Downstairs bar serves a decent coffee, not often the case in hotels like this.
The main weakness is the all inclusive offer. The appeal of AI is drinks and snacks whenever you want but that's difficult here. Snacks are only available during limited windows. Morning 'snacks' are just left over breakfast. Afternoon snacks aren't much better. All only available inside and downstairs, quite a walk away from poolside. Taking food from restaurants is frowned upon. For drinks there is no self service and only 1 bar poolside despite the pool (& hotel) being huge. Instead of having drinks whenever you want, you have drinks when you can be bothered to wait in line. Ice cream also only available for an hour or so in the afternoon. All comes across as a bit penny pinching.
