Lovely food. Service bumpy.

Our arrival to el Mexicana was bumpy. We were told the only available slot was 6.30pm- which we booked. We were the first arrival at the restaurant. The staff appeared stressed and unwelcoming. Our server initially was barking at us asking what we wanted to drink and appearing frustrated which was very off putting. However, as the meal progressed he got friendly and friendlier and couldn’t do enough for us by the end of the meal. Perhaps as he asked us to leave a review. The food was lovely and we could not fault it. It was a nice break from the AI buffet. If the staff were friendlier from the offset then the whole experience would have been so much better.

DO NOT BOOK!

DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL (Unless you’re a group of lads looking to explore the delights on the Albufeira strip). I booked to take my two daughters (age 8&11) on their summer holiday. The kids club turns out to be closed !!! Thomas Cook apparently unaware. We were allocated a room directly above the entertainment which was extremely loud. There are no pool towels provided so I had to go and buy some rather expensive ones from the local shop. The plethora of restaurants which they have are all booked up, so the only option is the buffet every breakfast, lunch and dinner! This is most definitely not a five star hotel - a rather dated 3 star (if that). It’s full of groups of lads drinking all day poolside and getting progressively louder and louder as the hours go on… Do not book especially if you are a family looking for a relaxing break abroad.

Holiday from Hell – Grand Muthu Forte da Oura, Albufeira

I am writing this review while I am still staying at the hotel, because unfortunately the experience has been so disappointing that I feel compelled to share it before we have even left.

After staying at the Grand Muthu Forte da Oura in Albufeira, I genuinely struggle to understand how this property is classified and marketed as a 5-star hotel. Based on our experience so far, it feels much more like a serviced-apartment complex with all-inclusive facilities than a genuine 5-star hotel.

There is a huge 5-star sign on the roof, but the reality simply doesn't match the expectation created by that rating.

Food and dietary requirements

The food has been one of our biggest disappointments.

As a vegetarian, I have found the choice extremely limited. On our first night, I essentially ended up eating salad because there were hardly any suitable vegetarian options. We have actually had to leave the hotel and eat elsewhere because we couldn't find suitable meals.

There are also very limited halal options, which makes this hotel particularly difficult for Muslim guests with dietary requirements.

For a hotel located in Portugal, I was also surprised by how little Portuguese food is available. The food feels heavily focused on familiar international/British tastes, rather than giving guests a genuine taste of the country they are visiting. Portuguese food seems to have very limited representation, with a specific Portuguese offering apparently restricted to one evening.

The food also feels repetitive, and on occasions it appeared that dishes served at one meal were being reused at another. I completely understand the importance of reducing food waste, but the overall impression was that the dining experience lacked freshness and variety.

And the drinks genuinely taste watered down to us.

The "all-inclusive" experience

One of the strangest things about this hotel is how difficult it is to get something as basic as a drink at night.

There is no convenient place within our hotel where we can simply buy a drink to take back to our room at night.

On one occasion, we were actually told to go to the disco to get a drink. The drink was served in a cup, meaning there wasn't even an option to take a can or bottle back to the room.

If I want a bottle of water or a soft drink in my room at night, I shouldn't have to leave the hotel and search for somewhere that's open.

There isn't even a basic tea and coffee-making facility in the room. No kettle with complimentary tea or coffee, nothing that allows you to make a simple hot drink when you wake up or return to your room.

On its own, that might seem like a small issue, but when you're paying over €1,000 for four nights and the property is presenting itself as 5-star, you expect basic in-room amenities.

At times, it feels less like an all-inclusive 5-star hotel and more like an apartment complex where you're expected to sort out your own basic supplies.

Restaurants and reservations

The restaurant booking system is another major frustration.

There are multiple Muthu hotels next to each other, and guests can apparently use various facilities across the complex. However, actually trying to access the restaurants or get information is incredibly difficult.

When we approached restaurants to ask questions, we were simply told to go back to our own hotel's reception.

The restaurants also seem to be fully booked constantly.

I completely understand that reservations are necessary, but if multiple restaurants are being advertised as part of an all-inclusive package, there should surely be reasonable availability for guests to actually use them.

Instead, it feels as though the buffet is the only realistic option.

Buffet and service

The buffet is completely self-service. You don't even get basic table service for something as simple as coffee.

There also appears to be a serious shortage of staff.

The individual staff members we've encountered have generally been friendly and polite, and I want to make that very clear. I don't blame the staff personally. They appear to be doing their best within a system where they have very little control.

The problem is the organisation, staffing levels and management of the overall guest experience.

The room

We have also found bugs in our room, which is completely unacceptable for a hotel charging this level of price and presenting itself as 5-star.

The rooms and much of the property also feel dated and cramped.

The lobby is probably the nicest part of the hotel, but elsewhere everything feels tightly packed together.

There is also no basic tea and coffee facility in the room, which again feels completely at odds with the 5-star rating.

Facilities

The swimming pool at our hotel is very small for the number of guests staying here, meaning you're effectively encouraged to use other pools within the complex.

There also isn't a gym on the side of the hotel where we are staying, which is another disappointment when you consider the property is marketed as 5-star.

There are also not enough sunbeds for the number of guests.

I've personally seen people lying on the grass and around flower-bed areas because there simply aren't enough places around the pool areas.

Why accommodate so many guests if the facilities cannot comfortably accommodate them?

Noise and atmosphere

The hotel is extremely loud.

There are many young people and teenagers staying here, alongside families, and unfortunately there appears to be very little control over the overall atmosphere.

The amount of loud swearing we've heard around the communal areas has been particularly disappointing. The F-word seems to be heard constantly around the pool and other areas.

This may not bother everyone, but for families expecting a comfortable and relaxing 5-star holiday, it can be very unpleasant.

The music around the pool has also been questionable. At one point, heavy rock/metal music was being played loudly while we were trying to relax by the pool.

Again, everyone has different tastes, but the overall atmosphere does not feel like what I would expect from a relaxing 5-star family resort.

Inconsistent rules

Another frustration is the apparent inconsistency in how rules are enforced.

For example, you can't play football or use a ball in certain pool areas and security will tell you off.

Yet at the same time, people can be jumping around, drinking and behaving loudly around the pool without appearing to face the same level of enforcement.

If there are rules, that's absolutely fine. But they need to be applied consistently and fairly.

The 5-star rating

This is the question I keep asking myself while staying here:

How is this a 5-star hotel?

There is a huge 5-star sign on the roof, but the actual experience simply doesn't match it.

I don't know exactly how the Portuguese hotel classification system works or what criteria were used to award this property its rating, so I won't claim that the hotel is "cheating the system". However, as a paying guest, I genuinely cannot understand how the experience we have received corresponds with what most people would reasonably expect from a 5-star hotel.

A 5-star rating should be reflected in the service, food, cleanliness, facilities, comfort, organisation and attention to detail.

For us, it isn't.

This feels like a serviced-apartment complex rather than a genuine 5-star hotel.

Putting a large 5-star sign on the roof doesn't make the guest experience 5-star.

Value for money

We are paying over €1,000 for four nights, which works out at around €250 per night.

For that price, I would expect considerably better food, service, facilities and overall organisation.

There are plenty of hotels across Europe at similar prices where I would expect a much higher standard.

Instead, we have had to leave the hotel to find suitable food, struggle to get basic drinks at night, have no tea or coffee facilities in the room, deal with limited restaurant availability, experience bugs in the room and deal with an overcrowded and noisy environment.

Final thoughts

I want to stress again that the individual staff members have generally been lovely. They are not the problem.

The problem is the system they're working within.

There simply doesn't seem to be enough staff, enough facilities or enough organisation to properly accommodate the number of guests staying here.

Unfortunately, this has been an extremely disappointing holiday and, so far, a holiday from hell.

I'm still staying at the hotel as I write this review, so this isn't a review based on something that happened months ago or a minor inconvenience that I've exaggerated after leaving. This is our experience as it is happening.

I've stayed in 3-star hotels that have provided a better overall experience than this.

For anyone considering booking, particularly vegetarians, guests requiring halal food, families looking for a quieter environment, or anyone expecting a genuine 5-star all-inclusive experience, I would strongly recommend doing your research and considering other options.

Would I return? Absolutely not.

My rating: ⭐ 1/5

The staff deserve credit for their friendliness, but unfortunately friendly staff cannot compensate for poor facilities, limited food choices, inadequate service, overcrowding and an experience that falls well short of what I believe a 5-star hotel should provide.
