A Grand hotel with old world charm
Staying at this hotel felt like stepping back in time to an era of grandeur. The exterior was absolutely stunning, although some areas were a little dated. The hotel is closing from February 2027 for an extension and renovation, and I sincerely hope they preserve its wonderful character and old-world elegance.
I stayed in a Deluxe Harbour View Room, which was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent, with the room cleaned daily and lovely little touches such as chocolates left on the pillows in the evening.
The staff were all incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made the stay even more enjoyable. We only ate breakfast at the hotel, but there was a fantastic selection to choose from, and room service was prompt and efficient.
The hotel is situated downhill from Valletta’s main square, but getting around is easy as the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle every 20 minutes to the square, which is a great added bonus.
Overall, I had a wonderful stay and would definitely return once the hotel reopens. I’m looking forward to seeing the improvements while hopefully finding all the grandeur, charm, and excellent service that made it so special in the first place!
Brilliant Hotel
My three friends and l stayed at the Grand Excelesior for 5 nights from 7th October and we were so pleased we had chosen to stay here. Everything was perfect. All the staff, no matter who we spoke to were approachable and friendly and they couldn’t do enough to help us especially Heathcliff in Customer Relations and Marita( l think that was her name) who seated us for breakfast every morning The breakfast was buffet style and there was lots of choice and it was constantly being replenished with freshly prepared food. The location overlooking the Grand Harbour was idyllic. We sat by the pool at some point every day and everything was spotlessly clean and it was so peaceful. The rooms although a little bit dated were quiet with comfortable beds. Also, a good size with a fridge and lots of storage. The cleaning staff who kept the room and bathroom spotless looked after us and our room very well. Our bathroom had a bath with shower over which we could manage but if you have mobility problems this could be a problem for you. The hotel is situated down a steep hill from Valletta centre and is walkable but if needed there is a free hotel car or shuttle which takes passengers to and from the centre near the bus station up until around 8pm every day. The hotel is closing in May for 2 yrs. We had such a a lovely time and were sorry to leave but look forward to returning in 2029 when the hotel opens its doors again after the building work is finished. Thanks again for making our stay memorable.

Lovely winter stay
Lovely hotel, friendly staff and spotless. Location perfect, just 10 minutes to central Valletta. Only negatives were uncomfortable sun loungers and late room cleaning.

Excelsior wasn’t Excellent
We have a partial ocean view room on the 4th floor which is below street level. Our balcony faces a stone wall not the ocean. To see the ocean, we have to go out on the balcony and look to the right 90 degrees. We were told the hotel was full so we couldn’t be moved so now I get to look at a stone wall for 4 days. There are no USB ports in the room. We had to purchase a converter for 5euros from the front desk then plug our UK-US converter into that then use a plug in with only one USB port. So we are playing musical chairs with our multiple devices to keep them charged. I use a CPAP machine at night. Hotel Maintenance brought in an extension cord but did not provide converters for my US power supply to my CPAP. The front desk told me to go into Valletta city and buy one. We had requested a king bed; their answer to that was to push our twin beds together with a thin topper. The bath tub is very deep but there are no safety bars for getting in/out of the shower. The water fluctuates both in temperature and flow. TV is old and small. Furniture is shabby. Room lacks any interior design features one might expect in a five star hotel. Housekeeping phone is perpetually busy. I requested a luggage rack but never received it. Totally not what I’d expect from a so-called 5 star hotel. Maybe a five star hotel 20 years ago. There are nice indoor and outdoor pools. There is a shuttle between the hotel and Valletta but a long wait.
