Topaz Hotel

Malta and Gozo, Europe
Bugibba

There is just so much to do in Bugibba - it's one of the jewels of the island. Its broad beaches, with their characteristic large, flat rocks are ideal for sunbathers, while the dazzling Mediterranean is an irresistible sight for swimmers, snorkellers and divers. To enjoy Bugibba to the full, we recommend a hotel that's just a little bit off the main thoroughfare - somewhere where you can really relax at the end of each day. Somewhere, in fact, like the Topaz Hotel!

This attractive, well-appointed hotel is one of Bugibba's finest, and provides an excellent base from which to explore. As well as the many miles of spectacular coastline, there are miles of shops, restaurants, pubs, clubs and more to discover.

The Topaz Hotel is your gateway to the splendour of Malta:

The thriving centre of Bugibba is just ten minutes walk from the Topaz Hotel, leaving you close enough to get there easily, while still being able to enjoy all the benefits of a quiet location for your home away from home.

The Topaz Hotel features a particularly wide range of facilities, including some special extra amenities that really set it apart, like the large swimming pool with whirlpool, and the pizzeria open evenings.

As well as all of that, you'll love the wonderful buffet cuisine and the poolside bar, there is even an on-site hairdresser and a souvenir shop.

The twin and double bed rooms are all air conditioned/heated and feature en suite bathroom and hairdryer. The rooms are also equipped with a flat screen TV, fridge, safe and kettle. Wi-Fi is available at a fee in guest rooms.

Many people choose Bugibba as their first destination when visiting Malta. With so much to see and do, it's the perfect place to fall in love with this magical island. And having the right base to set off on your journey of exploration makes it all the more special.

Hotel in Bugibba Malta during a heat wave

Location was great. And it was chosen specifically for the family. It is few hundred meters from to noisy beach and close to the outer city ring where catching the busses was easy. In just few steps from Hotel there were few grocery store where some even worked 24/7. Atmosphere at the pool was quite nice (for the summer holiday), although the pool was open only until 18h. There were many language students staying at the hotel. I think the hotel's decision was not to keep the pool open longer than that. Since we were with children, 18h was fine for us. Pool was a shadow on one side in the morning and on the other side in the moon. Which is for July extremely important. During our stay we had 3 days with the temperature above 40C. So, the pool was the only thing you can do in such extreme. Airco was a bit noisy, but it worked fine, and during the heatwave we haven't turn it off for days. We assumed that this old hotel was not design for such extremes. So if the room was once hot, it would be very difficult to cool it down.
Negative point: rooms are old, and outdated. But, the beds/mattresses were fine, and the pillows were good. Rooms were cleaned daily, and the towels and sheets were exchanged constantly. Negative point: The elevators were very slow. There are 4, but sindes they were so slow, we just stopped using them. Negative point: Tap water is not for drinking, and the water pressure is very low. This is a problem of Malta and not of this Hotel specifically. Food was great. There was a great variety of all sorts of dishes. Staff at the restaurant was great and friendly. This counts also for the staff at the pool bar and for the rest of the Hotel.

Overall, this was a great value for the money (for Bugibba).

Nice family holiday

We had very nice family holiday at Topaz Hotel. The location is perfect, close to the bus stops and rocky beaches at the St.Paul's Bay where you can go for a swim. The hotel itself and inventory are a little bit older, but rooms are cleaned perfectly everyday with changing towels. Mattresses and pillows are new and very comfortable. Indoor pool is small but perfect for the kids and helps to cool down in the midday while staying out of the sun. Outdoor pool is great with one part being in the shadows in the afternoon. They also serve drinks, cocktails and food at decent price. Breakfast and dinner are served in a restaurant where air conditioning is working perfectly (it turned to be very important during the heat wave in July). There are always a lot of choices of fruit and vegetables, delicious locally grown watermelons and tomatoes. The children liked ice-cream at dinner very much. The best compliment goes to the staff at the restaurant desk and housekeeping, they are really doing their job great and trying to find solution for every problem.

Average

I stayed at Hotel Topaz in Bugibba and overall I'd rate it 6.5/10.

The breakfast and dinner buffet had limited options, and the food at dinner was quite basic and didn't taste particularly good. The evening entertainment wasn't really for me—it consisted of a man in his 60s singing and DJing mostly older songs.

The outdoor pool was one of the highlights. It's large, clean, and the water wasn't too cold. The indoor pool was also nice and very quiet—it almost felt like having a private pool because hardly anyone seemed to know it was there.

The location is very convenient. It's about a 10-minute walk to Bugibba Square, and there's a supermarket just a 3-minute walk from the hotel.

One thing I noticed was that the hotel seemed to have a large number of younger students staying there on school trips, which may not suit everyone.

On the positive side, the hotel was clean, the rooms were cleaned daily, and towels were replaced every day.

Would I recommend Hotel Topaz? Probably not. That said, it's not a bad hotel—it just feels very average, with a few positives but also some noticeable drawbacks.

VERY BAD

I had a very bad experience and would not recommend this place.

When we went to the buffet, the two women handling the payments were extremely arrogant, rude, and impatient with customers. There was no reason for their attitude, and it made us feel very unwelcome.

It was a very windy day, yet the pool staff did not bother to close the umbrellas. They were flying everywhere, creating a serious safety hazard. My boyfriend was almost hit, as were several other guests, including a baby. This was completely unacceptable and could have resulted in someone being seriously injured.

One of the pool attendants was constantly walking around looking for things to complain about instead of providing good customer service. He saw my brother getting out of the pool and immediately approached him with a rude attitude, saying, “What are you doing taking water out of the pool?” My brother explained that he was simply getting out of the water, but the staff member replied, “Don’t do it again.” Is my brother supposed to stay in the pool the whole day just because the employee doesn’t want to clean the floor? It was an unnecessary and disrespectful interaction.

The same staff member also opened a large umbrella when we first arrived without checking his surroundings and nearly hit me in the face. Basic awareness of guests should be expected.

To make matters worse, there was chewing gum stuck to my sunbed, meaning I couldn’t properly use the deckchair that I had paid for.

The buffet was also disappointing. The wine being served was Lachryma Vitis, which is commonly sold as a cooking wine. Serving this as the buffet wine was very poor quality and not what we expected.

Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. Between the rude staff, the poor safety standards, the lack of cleanliness, and the disappointing buffet.
