Calypso Hotel

TripAdvisor Review
Malta and Gozo, Europe
Marsalforn

Think picturesque; think Gozo. Malta's smaller, quieter sister island is an idyllic haven – unspoilt and full of character. You can almost imagine running out of your hotel in the morning and straight into the cool, clear waters of the sea. And, at the Calypso Hotel, you can do exactly that.

Many hotels make a lot of their 'sea-adjacent' location; but the Calypso Hotel really is on the water's edge. The gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore will carry you off to sleep and the play of the sunlight glinting on the water will wake you in the morning.

The Calypso Hotel is an idyllic island retreat that comes with all mod cons:

Blending classic and contemporary design features, the Calypso Hotel is a beautiful base for any holiday. That it's situated on beautiful Gozo on the shores of the Mediterranean, makes it all the more special.

As you'd expect, the views from many of the hotel's twin rooms are dominated by that wide open expanse of blue sea. And wherever you are in the Calypso Hotel, you're never far from a stunning view. All rooms are tastefully furnished and benefit from a balcony or terrace. As well as direct dial phones and mini bars, tea/coffee facilities, rooms are equipped with colour TVs, but you'll probably be far too busy exploring the island or lounging on the sun terrace to switch it on much. All rooms are complete with an en-suite bathroom featuring a bathtub.

There's really so much to enjoy in and around the hotel. Gozo's shops and amenities are all within easy walking distance. And at the end of another sun-drenched day on land or in and around the sea, you'll return to the Calypso Hotel for a night of fine dining and entertainment.

With its spectacular coastline, its sandy beaches and its varied landscape, Gozo is truly idyllic. And after your stay at the Calypso Hotel, you may not want to go home. Still, there's always next year…

Wow what a week

This hotel is in the most beautiful of locations. The staff are amazing. We would definitely return. Here are our honest thoughts. You walk out onto the beach, to the cleanest waters, perfect for people who love to stroll around and switch off, it was too cold for me to go in the water so we will be back!! Overall 10/10

Cleanliness - the staff are amazing. Our room was spotless. There wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. Absolutely no complaints. Overall 10/10

Breakfast - a huge shout out to the lady who over sees the day to day running. She doesn’t stop and nothing is too much trouble, the food was fresh, good selection. Lows - the juice machine was temperamental, the coffee was awful. Some of the crockery was chipped. The day the lady was away it was a bit chaotic. She really is the glue that keeps it all together! Overall 9/10

Rooms - we stayed in a room overlooking the back, it was quiet, the balcony was small but perfectly fit for a couple. The rooms are a good size, nice size bathroom, fresh towels daily. The beds are harder than the UK but not as bad as Thailand!! We don’t mind but some people may find them uncomfortable. There was no clothes rail to pop damp items so we had to drape over the chairs. Overall 10/10

The pool wasn’t available but up on the 6th floor the views are incredible and the pool looked ample. We will have to return to try it out.

We didn’t have lunch or an evening meal at the hotel however there are plenty of choices a stones throw away. The hotel had a good menu and the option for room service, Hickory joes across the way must be tried!! If you want an amazing pizza you must try the little coffee shop in Victoria where the police officers eat! Absolutely stunning!!! There’s also a little coffee shop in Victoria in an alley that does the best canoli , lemon meringue and traditional ice cream…

Buses - the best public transport we have ever seen. All the drivers are so helpful and it’s just so easy a process..The UK could learn a lot!!!

We used the fast ferry once, excellent service to have!

TripAdvisor Review
Disappointing.

We have visited the Calypso quite a few times over the years. This year we decided to stay bed & breakfast rather than half-board which we have done in the past. It was probably a wise decision as there appeared to be an evening meal available on only one of our ten nights stay. Knowing that there were several options nearby this did not worry us. How one of the drinks offerings at breakfast can be described as "orange" is beyond me. It was extremely weak and almost colourless - but to be honest it has hardly changed over the years we have visited. We prefer to have a traditional English breakfast when on holiday - fitting us up for the rest of the day and with an evening meal to look forward to. The appearance of the bacon could only be described as "off-putting" - slices (dripping in fat) were crammed closely together and did not appear appetising. On previous visits the guests had the option of fried eggs, omelettes made to order and freshly-poached eggs. Not this time! The state of the room (Bay view) was somewhat of a disappointment - same furniture from forty years ago and cracked, damaged & loose floor tiles that once upon a time would have been attended to without hesitation. Having got these comments off my chest I have only praise for the staff, especially the night manager who was about to chase up our taxi transfer when the driver arrived. Shall we go back again? Unlikely provided the hotels under construction are accepting visitors.

Great stay thanks to Ester

Our stay at the hotel was truly wonderful, and what made it especially memorable was the exceptional service we received in the restaurant each morning. A very special mention goes to Ester, who made our breakfasts something to look forward to every single day.

Ester is the perfect example of what outstanding hospitality looks like. She is incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring. From the moment we arrived each morning, she greeted us with warmth and a smile that instantly set a positive tone for the day. She consistently went out of her way to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, often anticipating requests before we even had to ask.

While the hotel itself was nice, it’s the people like Ester who make a stay unforgettable. Her dedication, professionalism, and genuine warmth are a huge asset to the team. We left with great memories, and a big part of that is thanks to her.

We would absolutely return, and we sincerely hope to see Ester again on our next visit.

What it is, so far from what it could be

It doesn’t feel great when you write a negative review. I do so in the hope it leads to improvements . Or at the least it helps others spend their precious time and money better.

What went wrong. Every single staff interaction felt like you are an inconvenience from the lady receptionist who clearly hates being there to the breakfast guy who acted like you requested a kidney when you asked for eggs pouched not fried.

The worst shower i ever had in paid accommodation. The room phone that is ornamental. The unhappy hour drinks. The sign telling guests not to fill water bottles from their drinks machine.

This hotel is in a perfect location. Has a great roof space and rooms have a nice balcony and view. It should be a top place to visit but i can only assume the owners are happy to overcharge for a poor experience because enough tourists will stay there….once

Great Breakfast

Nice hotel on water front, staff friendly, rooms clean and a great selection of breakfast food. There was a pool and bar on the roof, though opening hours were limited in May. There were plenty of restaurants, cafes close by, a small beach and a great ice cream bar opposite. Handy hotel for exploring the island.
