We arrived at Michelangelo Resort and Spa around 12am to a visually underwhelming entrance and a lacklustre welcome. Check in was a little too slow for my liking especially after a late flight. There was a late supper through the restaurant doors, the lights were on but nobody was home, it was empty! There was food laid out but unfortunately no labels. The selection was fine but nothing special, just enough to get you through the night. This was our only visit to the late night supper buffet! Not the 5 star hotel experience I was expecting… After a mediocre beginning everything else on the whole was fantastic. The concierge Adnan was a polite and efficient fellow, he took us to our rooms in a little golf buggy, took our bags up and showed us around the room briefly. We booked two sea view rooms which both had wonderful views of Aegean sea and Turkish mountains. Sunrise was truly spectacular. Unusual open plan showering but it was fine for a family. The rooms were cleaned daily, water bottles were refreshed and the clean towels were plentiful. The grounds were pleasant, kept clean, with a lovely chapel in the middle to remind everyone Christ is King. There was a lot of steps and an uphill or downhill climb depending on where you were heading within the grounds so something to think about if you’re a wheelchair user, elderly or less able to walk. The swimming pools were cleaned daily and were an ok temperature. The infinity pool was great, epic views, with the Mediterranean restaurant and bar next to it. There is a no reserve sunbed policy but most guests ignored this. We found ourselves reserving 2 sunbeds for a family of 5 which was firm but fair! It was the only way to get a nice spot. However, wherever you were around the infinity pool, the views were still lovely. The walk down to the beach took a few minutes, there were sunbeds, and seemed to be less people down there. The water was crystal clear but worth taking water shoes because of the pebbles. We took a walk along both ends of the beach, did some snorkelling and saw some wild mountain goats who came quite close to the grounds of the hotel. It’s worth hiring a car for a short drive to Therma beach which is about 7 minutes away, Kos Town, Paradise Beach, Kefalos Bay (pedlos or swim to the island). Back to Michelangelo: Breakfast and dinner was good enough, a wide variety of foods for everyone. In the evening the bar was lively with traditional Greek dancers, bands, and singers on every night. A special thank you to the night bar staff especially Angela, Chrysa, Eleni, and from the Restaurant, Lucas, his wife, Apple Joy, our lovely room cleaners, and many other wonderful people who made our stay unforgettable.

Our second stay at Michelangelo Resort & Spa, Kos 🇬🇷

We’re still on holiday here and, having stayed at Michelangelo before, we were really looking forward to returning.

There is no denying that this is a gorgeous, gorgeous place. The location is outstanding, the pool areas are beautiful, and the setting is honestly hard to beat. We stay in Greece regularly, so we’ve experienced a lot of different hotels, and the surroundings here are definitely one of Michelangelo’s biggest strengths.

However, unfortunately, there are quite a few things that have left us disappointed this time.

Firstly, the food. It has improved slightly since our last visit, but in our opinion it is still far from what we would expect from a 5-star hotel. Despite being on half board, we actually ate very little in the hotel and found ourselves going into Kos Town most evenings for dinner instead.

The pool snacks, on the other hand, have been very good, and we actually preferred paying for these rather than eating in the main restaurant.

We only had one meal in the main dinner hall during our stay. One thing that really surprised us with half board was that drinks aren’t included at dinner at all — you have to pay even for soft drinks and, incredibly, even a cup of tea.

We definitely wouldn’t recommend going all-inclusive here based on our experience. It doesn’t feel like what we would consider a true all-inclusive package, with very little included and additional charges for many drinks and branded options.

This is particularly disappointing because things were very different when we stayed here three years ago.

On our previous visit, we were offered evenings dining in the hotel’s other restaurants, whereas this time we weren’t given that option. Drinks were also included with our meals previously, but this year they are an additional cost.

It really feels like the overall experience has changed, and unfortunately our impression this time is that profit seems to have taken priority over the guest experience.

Another small but frustrating point is that the hotel doesn’t accept cash. Everything has to be paid by card or added to your room, which we found inconvenient.

I want to stress that we are not comparing this hotel unfairly just because it is in Greece. We stay in Greece all the time, and we have stayed in lower-star hotels that have gone above and beyond, offering fantastic food, much more choice and a better overall guest experience for considerably less money.

For us, Michelangelo has so much potential. The setting, pools and location are absolutely stunning, and with improvements to the food, inclusions and overall guest experience, this could be such a special place to stay.

We genuinely hope things improve, because it would make such a difference to what is already a beautiful hotel. ❤️🇬🇷
