We stayed at this hotel for a week at the beginning of September. From the moment we arrived we felt welcome and 'at home'. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Our room (Superior Sea View) was big enough, comfortable and had a full size fridge with ice box. Bathroom had walk-in shower. We stayed on a half-board basis so took buffet breakfast on the terrace outside the ground floor dining room in the mornings, and dinner at the rooftop restaurant in the evenings. The fruit selection at breakfast was superb! All the 'usual' things plus nectarines, plums and pears. The coffee from the fancy Nespresso coffee machine (selection of pods available) was possibly the best we've ever had on holiday! Waitress-served dinner was equally good with a huge variety of choices, large portions and speedy service with a smile (although you could slow it down by just ordering salad and appetiser courses to start with). We enjoyed the pool which was never busy during our stay, and also swam in the sea on most days. The beach is sandy, very clean, and slopes very gently into the sea so is ideal for babies/children. There is also Kalyvaki beach on the other side of the little port, about 10-15 mins walk. This beach appeared to be very popular with locals on weekends. We used the pool bar/outside seating area on most days for a lunchtime/mid-afternoon beer. Prices were very fair at 5.50 euros for 500ml and you normally got a complimentary bowl of tortillas/crisps with the beers. We also enjoyed ice creams from the pool bar (gelato style) and can recommend both the cherry and chocolate flavours! There are well-maintained spa facilities - 3 jacuzzis, a cold plunge pool, a sauna, small gym and occasional exercise classes but we didn't use these. Georgioupolis still retains some of its Greek charm and alongside the touristic shops there are a couple of small supermarkets, a butchers, a cafe/patisserie and a taxi rank, all near the little village square. The tavernas here are bustling in the evenings. The whole setting of Georgioupolis is spectacular, on the waterfront and backed by the White Mountains. The area is good for walking and we purchased a small walking guide in the supermarket (Discover Georgioupolis on Foot) by Berend Wolffenbuttel which is available in English and German. We did 2 of the 3 walks which start from Georgioupolis. The other 6 walks are around nearby villages. We also took the little Land Train on one afternoon to visit Lake Kournas. There are several opportunities for different little trips using this train. The public bus (bus stop 10-15 mins walk from hotel) can be used for trips to Chania (about 38km) or Rethymnon (about 25km). We visited Rethymnon (about 8 euros return each) as we had visited Chania before, but for a first-time visitor to the area I would recommend visiting Chania over Rethymnon. We really enjoyed all aspects of our stay at Georgioupolis Beach Hotel and I'm sure we WILL be back!
Nice hotel in good location next to beach and all local amenities. Rooms and hotel clean and tidy at all times. Food was good and service excellent.
Overall a beautiful stay, friendly staff and lovely location...
On arrival we had a few issues with the room, which caused our shower to leak every time it was used, causing a sewage smell in our room. The hotel staff were accommodating and got it fixed within the next day.
For couples planning a romantic stay we recommend that you upgrade the room (we had a deluxe double), we were hoping to on arrival but due to business of the hotel we're unable to. The room was clean and had all the essentials ( including a robe and slippers and hairdryer). We were also able to request a kettle to have teas in our room.
Due to the location of our room being next to the lift, at times our sleep was disturbed by the sounds of other guests leaving and returning to their rooms. At some points we were also disturbed by the doors slamming shut and also scraping and banging of chairs being put away upstairs which became slightly annoying. The rooms themselves aren't soundproofed the best so there were a few nights where our sleep was disturbed by crying babies or children running in the corridors.
The location of the hotel is great. Very close to the beach (a literal stones throw), supermarket and local shops and restaurants. It's also very close to a small chapel, if you're feeling brave, we recommend you take the challenge to walk the rocky sea road to get there!! You can also book taxis easily with the reception, however it is advisable to compare prices as some of the nearby vendors offer excursion trips at different, sometimes better prices.
The sauna, sun lounging and hot tub facilities were great and we got to use them frequently due to how quiet the sun deck was. Even though the hotel was busy, we often found ourselves to be the only ones using them. We were also able to book massages with an in-house masseuse for really great value at 40€ for a 50 minute Swedish massage.
Pilates is also offered and takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We were hoping to take part on the Monday, but unfortunately it got cancelled, likely due to low uptake.
The food was perfect and will be greatly missed! The roof top lounge really adds to dinner time with gorgeous views of the surrounding area and the sunset. Staff are very attentive and portions are big, you get buffet breakfast (lots of options, fresh fruit and juices, granola, salad options and the standard bacon sausages and eggs) and for dinner you get a salad, an appetiser and main meal included if you are half board. We were more than satisfied every night. You do have to pay for drinks and 50% on most seafood dishes but the food is absolutely worth it. There is also delicious ice cream and pizza served during the day (not included but worth the price).
Overall we had a lovely stay and would return but would definitely upgrade the room! Thank you to all the staff for an easy stay!!
