Terrible experience
We stayed at RG Village Crete Resort & Spa and expected more from a five-star all-inclusive hotel.
The staff were friendly, the cats roaming around the resort were lovely, and the views of the mountains and sea were beautiful. Unfortunately, those positives did not make up for the problems we experienced. The Wi-Fi barely worked in many parts of the hotel, there were too few parking spaces, and our room and other areas often smelled of sewage. When it rained, water even entered our room on the upper floor.
The facilities were disappointing too. Some gym machines were broken and were not repaired during our stay. The pools closed at 6 p.m., many other facilities closed early, and the restaurant closed at around 9:30 p.m. We were also surprised by the extra charges: the spa costs extra, drinks after 11 p.m. and food outside restaurant hours are not included, and a game of pool or air hockey costs €2 or €1 respectively. The hotel also requires a €20 deposit per beach or pool towel. In our experience, the wait for the free transfer to the beach could range from 30 minutes to two hours.
We found the food very poor. Some dishes and vegetables appeared on several consecutive days, which made them seem less fresh to us. There were very few halal options and only a limited vegetarian selection, while many dishes contained pork.
Given the issues with the room, the food, the limited opening hours and the extra charges, this did not feel like the five-star experience we had booked.

Lovely holiday, would stay again.
This is an honest review from our week in Crete with our 2 year old daughter. Firstly this is not a 5-star resort as every negative review mentions, but is it bad, no it's not. If you travel to St tropez and other glamorous settings this is probably a 3 star at best, just think to yourself, how much did this holiday cost??.
We stayed in a Junior suite with private pool, Great Air Con, fabulous power shower, really comfy bed, I seriously cannot fault the room at all. Yes they don't give you milk, yes you only get one bottle of water, which also annoyed the moaners, around the resort are water fountains that you can refill any bottle you have, this water is cold and is available 24hrs a day.
There is a shop on site which is actually not that expensive, it doesn't have a fantastic range but enough to keep you going if you need it.
The hotel is within lovley grounds, yes it's hilly but plenty of nice places to sit and take in the views and have a nice drink.
There are 5 pools, 2 adults only, one kiddie pool with slides, one other pool is OK with supervised children and the last one is for anybody aged over 16. Plenty of sunbeds, no need to get up at 6am and reserve, even the sunbeds at the kiddle pool are very comfortable. Unfortunately there are not too many at the poolside with shade so this may cause you an issue. The kiddie pool opens 11am and all others at 10am.
The pool bar is good, Theolagos the main barman is very friendly but yes only 2 drinks each which does cause issues when there are 3 of you. After 7pm this bar becomes more lively with music till 2am but although we were near it we didn't hear it at all. The drinks during the day are OK, the local beer which is not bad and yes the cocktails are pre mixed but they definitely do have alcohol in them. There is a snack bar at the far end, which serves pizza, cookies, salads and self service soft & hot drinks along with beer and white & rose wine. The main restaurant is next to reception and is OK, the food is obviously not 5 star standard, but you will find nice cuts of meat, with the odd special on other days, we never had an issue with the quality of food on offer with the exception of a lack of choice for children, if your child is fussy they struggle. Breakfast is by far the best of all three meals offered.
The staff are OK, some are very friendly, some just blank you, we never encountered any rudeness but the reception staff don't really make you feel welcome or give the impression they care about your stay. We never had any issues so we never really needed to use them.
Basically that's it. We had a lovely time and loved our room, enjoyed the food and found the overall atmosphere very nice and relaxing. We would definitely stay again.
Holiday Review
We had a lovely stay at RG Hotel, and the absolute highlight was the wonderful team—friendly, attentive, and always going the extra mile. A huge thank you to reception staff Maria, Peng, and Nicolas, who were so helpful and truly went above and beyond whenever they could.
Food & Dining I’d read mixed reviews about the main restaurant beforehand, but we were very impressed! While options were a little limited, everything cooked was exceptional—especially the tender lamb and delicious gyros. It was such a treat to enjoy proper, authentic Greek food: dolmas, fresh Greek salad, and creamy tzatziki were always readily available—no generic chicken nuggets here!
At the bar, the staff are fantastic—hardworking and so welcoming, particularly Konstantina, Ioanna, and the two male bar team members. The only small downside: spirits aren’t served until 7pm, but from 11am you can order wine, beer, and cocktails all day.
Rooms & Pools Our swim-up room was beautiful, spacious, and spotlessly clean with a great layout and a fantastic large shower—plus stunning views! A few small touches would elevate it further though: the room flooring needs refreshing, the connecting sections between pools could be cleaner, and the private pool loungers would benefit from the same comfy toppers as the main pool ones. Also, note that the sun doesn’t reach this side until around 1:30pm, so mornings can feel quite cool.
The snack bar was okay—salads, pasta, and two pizza varieties—but would love to see some meat options to pair with the salads.
Practical Notes
• This hotel is not ideal if you have mobility issues: it’s spread out, hilly, and involves plenty of walking, though a buggy service is available to the lower areas.
• Probably not the best choice for young children either: food is adult-focused, and there’s no evening entertainment, though there is a dedicated children’s pool.
• Perfect, however, if you want to relax and unwind—peaceful and laid-back.
• The nearby village is a decent walk and doesn’t have much for tourists, but Rethymnon is absolutely beautiful and well worth visiting! The shuttle from Sasi Restaurant costs €11 return per person—book in advance—and the driver was lovely. While you’re there, try their amazing iced coffee for just €2!
Final Thoughts RG Hotel has the friendliest staff around, stunning scenery, and a real focus on quality, authentic food. With a few small upgrades, it could easily hit 5 stars—right now, it’s a solid 4, and we’d happily return for a quiet break.
Awful. Do not recommend
Not a resort made for children at all. Nothing for the children to do later on , only one pool for the children that’s it. They make out there entertainment every night when you book the holiday. There isn’t , there is some dancers for about 20 minutes 3 times a week in a tiny outdoor area. I would not book again. And I wouldn’t recommend booking with children. My child got upset out side the cafe area in this resort and the cafe lady who works there decided to scream at my child and tell my child to shut up and that she cannot deal with crying children and we need to move and go before she rings security on us. Definitely do not recommend coming here if you have children. Children cry it’s normal. Clearly this lady should not work in a resort where children are allowed if she cannot deal with a child crying. Disgusting and definitely not professional at all. Very far out from the towns is about €25 euros in a taxi to the town.
Good Value Friendly Hotel, ON a Lovely Island
Friendly, relaxed hotel with decent quality rooms, good food and drinks. Nicely set out with 4 pools, lots of different sun terraces and a nice view. They have a laudable eco friendly approach as well, lots of solar power. Rooms can be cleaned and changed daily, but if you don't need it, they don't automatically do it. They also have water fountains everywhere, so you just refill rather than getting a new plastic bottle. I have read some reviews that note the steep slopes and access, but they have a fleet of electric buggies and will happily transport you anywhere on site. Also of note are the guided tours on offer that can be found by the main bar,t hey are really good value for money. Recommended, will definitely look to come again.
