Disappointment and rude receptionists

We booked an all-inclusive stay at R.G Village, near Rethymno in northern Crete. On arrival early in the morning, the staff—particularly the night porter—were friendly and helpful, and we were assured we would have full use of the restaurants and facilities until our departure.

The pools are pleasant, and the overall atmosphere is relaxing. Some kitchen staff were warm and welcoming; others appeared disinterested. A special mention goes to the barman at Dionysus Bar, who was consistently friendly and helpful.

However, the location is deeply inconvenient. The nearest bus stop is a 30-minute walk in over 30°C heat. On-site shop items are double the price of those at the supermarket 1.5 miles away, and the shop itself has little to no air conditioning—making it uncomfortably hot for both customers and staff.

A free bus runs from the complex centre to a rocky beach and restaurant about 10 minutes away—but we were not informed of this until we discovered it by chance. There are no other shops or amenities in the area, and walking anywhere else means at least 20 minutes each way in the heat. The beach and restaurant appear to be owned by the same complex.

Taxis are extortionate: £12 for a 10-minute journey, £21 for 15 minutes. Unless you hire a vehicle, getting around is prohibitively expensive. Some drivers are pleasant, but others are rude and exploitative—one even tried to charge us extra for scuffing the seats with dusty sandals, despite the dry roads making dust unavoidable.

The restaurant food is lovely and varied, with a good selection of local wine, beer, and soft drinks. The cleaners are excellent and the rooms and grounds are very clean—but cleaning must be booked online a day in advance, which should be automatic for a hotel of this standard.

Speaking of standards: this is marketed as a 5-star hotel. It clearly is not—3 to 4 stars at best. The inflated rating feels like a cynical way to justify higher prices. We were also required to pay an additional €105 in cash for the 7-night stay—no card accepted—which meant extra charges due to exchange rates.

On checkout, we were told to hand in our all-inclusive bands before 11am, despite our transfer not arriving until evening. We were originally told we'd retain full access until departure. Instead, we were abruptly informed we'd be restricted to just one pool bar. Reception was rude and pushy, demanding the bands immediately with no room for discussion or flexibility. We are always polite to staff, but this lack of communication, empathy, and basic courtesy was deeply disappointing.

I have visited Greece eight times and love the country. But this experience has left a sour taste—and made me question whether the travel time and cost are really worth it.

Nice hotel, rude staff and rubbish drinks.

Hotel itself is big with plenty of pools and space to chill. However that’s the only perk… the snack bar repeated the same few dishes and I can imagine after 5 days you would be fed up. The bar staff in every bar were rude, slow and not friendly. The cocktails were awful and the beer was watery. We came as a big group but you can’t order more than 2 drinks each at a time. All inclusive finishes at 11pm and you have to pay after that. The main restaurant was ok with lots of choice. Be prepared to walk up and down lots of slopes and steps! The highlight was the lovely bloke driving the buggy! All in all not a great experience and wouldn’t call it 5*

Absolutely wonderful! Can't fault it!

This is the second time we have been to RG Village and will definitely not be the last! We arrived very late at night and the gentleman at the reception was very welcoming. He gave us the choice of two rooms one of which included a pool. We chose the family room without a pool as we knew that it was going to be spacious (two separate rooms and a bathroom, ours was king bed and the children's two single beds). This time it was on the terrace, which was beautiful. He drove us to our room through the lovely path filled with the nice smell of flowers. What a brilliant way to start the holiday! The rooms were impeccably clean and when we needed any room service, it was very easy to book online through the resort's webpage. The cleaners left it super clean and tidy. I asked for extra towels and these were provided immediately when asked at the reception. This brings me to the reception staff. They were all extremely polite, professional and so helpful, always with a smile and ready to assist. Peny was impeccably courteous and knew what she was doing. She made us feel valued and welcome and answered all our queries with a smile on her face. She is an asset to the establishment. She was amazing! And so were the others, Elena, Maria and the men at the reception too (apologies I could not remember all the names). Evi, the manager, is wonderful, to say the least! She was so pleasant and helpful and always greeted us and had small talk with us too. It was also so lovely that she remembered us and so did some of her staff! She was extremely professional and answered all our queries. She was also great with the staff and you could see that they were all comfortable working together. The food was varied and very tasty and that was the case each day. There was a mix of local and international cuisine to suit everyone's taste! Extremely tasty breads and bread sticks too. Plenty of puddings and the kadaifi and baklava were to die for. We hardly needed to go outside to eat. But when we did, RG Village had a free shuttle that took us to an amazing restaurant by the beach that had excellent food should you feel the need to eat outside of the resort, but here you pay for food. The snack bar has also a good variety of salad, pizzas and much more, and also biscuits and the traditional Greek bread sticks. A good choice of soft drinks, teas and coffees and alcoholic drinks were also available all day and evening in RG Village. We could not complain about anything and I disagree with comments that describe the food otherwise. The staff in the restaurant and snack bar were amazing and worked so hard and constantly to make sure that everything was served in an orderly manner and aplenty. I am in awe of them, well done! Giannis was also very kind and helpful. Maria from room service was friendly and pleasantly polite. All staff greeted you when passing. If you have not brought towels with you, the hotel loaned you some with a deposit that you get back when you return them. There also is a stand where you can have special frappe iced coffee made by the loveliest person ever! Despina is an amazing person and so friendly to everyone. She was so happy to see us again! She made sure she spoke to us and we had lovely conversations. She is another asset to the place, such a wonderful person. And so is Theo who is in the bar! He was pleasant and chatted to us too. And also the young Theo at the bar too! The place is on a hill but this is not a problem for us as it is much breezier in August than the coast and with nice views of the hills with olive trees and the sea. If you are looking to walk to places, then you can go down the hill to the small village where there are a few supermarkets and a couple of coffee shops and a car rental. But this is not necessary as there is also a shop in the resort that sells pretty much everything. RG Village also organises shuttles to the nearest historical town of Rethymon, a beautiful place to visit. RG also can offer you other trips if you want to go and explore the area and the person who is in charge of this is very helpful too. She can also arrange for you to rent a car should you wish to. We made the most of the pools and the beach (taking the shuttle there as it is not within walking distance). We were happy with both and my husband also used the gym every day to exercise. The children made friends with other kids and it felt that it was a nice and safe place to be especially when seeing that the resort did not just attract foreign tourists but Greek people too. RG Village is an amazing place to stay and we felt that one week was really not enough to be there. We certainly felt very welcome and among friends. Next time we will book it for more. Everyone was amazing and we would not have enjoyed it without them. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable!

Everything Was Well Maintained

What stood out most was how well everything was looked after. The common areas were always clean, the pool was never crowded, and everyone we spoke to was helpful. We would definitely stay again.

Amazing, can't wait to go back

We had a 1 week stay and have to say the place is fantastic. Views are amazing and the hotel is spotless. All the staff were fantastic but a special mention has to go to Peny on Reception and the lovely Despina at the coffee bar.
