Amphora

This could be a really good hotel. There was much to like, however, some serious issues which means it's not somewhere I can recommend, or will return to.

Positives: clean room, lovely spa area (expensive treatments so we didn't use), excellent gym, good breakfast, plenty of loungers, lovely pools, very good location opposite the beach, kettle in the room with herbal teas and coffee, nice bathroom, good water pressure and a magnifying mirror. VERY comfy bed.

Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives.

We'd booked half board. Big mistake. The dining room at breakfast was buzzy and full with lots of staff. In the evening it had all the feel of the love child created by matchmaking a care home and an airport waiting area. Bright lights, very few staff. The food was lukewarm and often not labelled so you had no clue what you might be eating. We were definite second class citizens - had to collect a dinner voucher, and sat at bare tables whereas the a la carte diners (all four of them) got tablecloths and glasses. Not ONCE were we asked if we would like a drink with our meal. Which we would have, so that's a financial loss to the hotel. We were told we could not have dinner outside, yet saw other people doing so. Our plates were not cleared when we'd finished. We were, quite frankly, ignored.

WiFi was poor - not able to download anything to my phone. Few TV channels in English, no possibility of streaming as TVs were so old. maintenance needed in room eg wooden cabinet containing fridge falling apart. Lots of light switches and sockets with glowing lights in the room, so you can't get it dark. No sun on pool area until lunch time.

Top tips: bring your own tea bags - Earl Grey not available, English Breakfast sporadic (usually find both readily available in good hotels in Europe). DO NOT BOOK HALF BOARD. Lots of restaurants nearby, which also have cheaper drinks than the rooftop bar. Make sure you have Uber/Bolt downloaded as you'll need these to get to the old Town. If you're planning on plugging in a toothbrush charger, bring an adapter.

Some of the staff were lovely and helpful, so I feel bad writing this review. Lots of these things could be fixed without any cost (eg dim the lights slightly at dinner, label the food, make sure it's hot) - looks like the new hotel under construction might supply some much needed competition.

I think I spent more time looking out at the sea than I did at my phone on this trip. Waking up to that view was lovely, and it made even the slow mornings feel like part of the holiday. We’d have breakfast, take a walk by the water, and decide what to do in Split after that.

It was a great place to come back to at the end of the day, too. We got to enjoy the city and still have that seaside feeling when we returned. I’d choose Amphora again, especially for a room with that view.

I had a wonderful experience at Hotel Amphora in Split during the Wine & Paint event on the rooftop. The setting was beautiful, with a stunning view that made the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere was incredibly pleasant and relaxing, everything was spotless, and the staff were very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The entire experience was lovely, from the ambiance to the service. A perfect combination of a beautiful location, great hospitality, and a memorable experience. I would happily recommend it and look forward to coming back!
