Your adventure begins with a tour of cosmopolitan Shanghai, visiting the peaceful Yuyuan Gardens, a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty landscape design. Continue to the historic French Concession, a characterful district made up of leafy streets and European-inspired architecture, before discovering the treasures of the Shanghai Museum. Browse a world-class collection of bronzes, porcelain, and calligraphy, charting the story of Chinese civilisation through the centuries. After lunch, walk along the Bund, Shanghai’s iconic riverside embankment lined with grand 20th-century buildings. From here you can enjoy fantastic views across the Huangpu River of the city’s skyline. Later, spend time on Nanjing Road, one of the world's busiest shopping streets, where you’ll find everything from big brand stores to local snack shops. Take an optional evening cruise along the Huangpu River (payable locally).

Explore the well-preserved ancient water town of Zhujiajiao, a collection of meandering canals, bridges, and traditional homes. Walk across stone bridges that cross winding canals, and admire old wooden houses which give you a taste of traditional river-town life. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight to Guilin.

After breakfast, travel to one of Guilin’s most scenic spots, Fubo Hill. This famous karst hill, situated beside the Li River, features strange rock shapes, old stone carvings, and peaceful views of Guilin’s natural landscape. Travel on to Elephant Trunk Hill, named after its unique shape which resembles a giant elephant stretching its trunk into the Li River. The hill is one of China’s most photographed natural landmarks and a symbol of Guilin. Take a scenic walk along the banks of one of Guilin's many lakes, taking in the beautiful views, before enjoying an afternoon visit to a tea plantation, where you’ll learn about the different leaves used in traditional Chinese tea-making.

Your day begins with a peaceful cruise along the winding Li River, a world-famous river running through dramatic limestone peaks. Its dream-like green hills and surrounding rural villages have inspired countless Chinese paintings. After taking in this charming rural landscape, arrive in the picturesque town of Yangshuo. Following lunch, explore this stunning area at leisure. This evening, join an optional tour to see the Impression Liu Sanjie, an outdoor night show (payable locally).

Take a morning flight to Xi'an. Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, a key cultural symbol built over 1,300 years ago that marks the spread of Buddhism across China. Discover Xi’an’s ancient City Wall, one of China’s best-preserved city defences: this huge stone wall encircles old Xi’an, and you can walk along the top for magnificent views of the city. Stroll through the Muslim Quarter's marketplace, a lively old market area blending Chinese and Islamic culture. Taste local street food and browse the many handicraft stalls of this busy neighbourhood.

A highlight of your tour takes place today as you visit the UNESCO-listed Terracotta Army. Marvel at the sight of over 8,000 life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots, each uniquely crafted to guard the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Unearthed in 1974, this vast underground army stands as one of the most remarkable archaeological finds of the modern era. As you explore the excavation pits, admire the intricate details of each figure, from their facial expressions to their armour, and learn about the immense effort that went into their creation over 2,000 years ago. Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," this awe-inspiring site offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient Chinese history and the powerful legacy of the Qin Dynasty. After lunch, return to the city centre for a short rest before enjoying dinner and a Tang Dynasty Show, a dazzling live performance inspired by China’s glorious Tang era. This morning, transfer to the train station to board a bullet train to Beijing. On arrival, proceed to the stunning UNESCO-listed Summer Palace, a masterpiece of Chinese design. A full day of sightseeing starts in Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public city squares in the world and the site of major political events. Sitting at the heart of Beijing, Tiananmen Square is also the gateway to the ancient imperial palace and the Forbidden City’s large palace complex. Explore this enormous former residence of the Ming and Qing emperors, made up of hundreds of golden-roofed halls which showcase the power and splendour of ancient Chinese royalty. Visit the UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven, used by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to offer sacrifices to Heaven and pray for bountiful harvests. Later, enjoy a captivating acrobatic show.

Perhaps the country's most iconic landmark, today visit the astonishing Great Wall of China, built over 2,000 years ago to help defend China's northern frontier. Marvel at the vast sweep of the Great Wall as it winds across mountains and valleys in one of the world's most remarkable feats of engineering. Continue to a Cloisonne factory, where you’ll learn how an ancient metalworking technique used to create jewellery, vases, and other decorative works. Stop to see the Bird's Nest stadium, used for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Discover the Lama Temple with its numerous rooms and 26-metre-tall Buddha, carved out of a single piece of sandalwood. To this day, many monks and worshippers come here to burn incense. For this reason, we have indicated approximate times only. Your local guide will inform you of any schedule changes as they are informed of them. The driving times listed are point to point and do not include the duration of excursions or stops en route. Some road construction and/or weather conditions may lengthen the driving times or sailing conditions.
Please note lighters and aerosol cans are not allowed planes, trains or sights of special interest, such as Tiananmen square, Forbidden city, The Temple of Heaven, Terracotta Warriors, Three Gorges Dam, and the Wild Goose Pagoda.
If booking more than 12 weeks before departure a deposit of £390.14pp will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 12 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 12 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.
For all tours departing in 2026, no visa is required for British Passport Holders.
If you are departing in 2027 or later, you will require a visa to visit mainland China. We recommend you organise this 2 months before travel. If you’re 14 to 70 years old, you must apply for a visa online and then go in person to a China visa application centre. To apply online please use their website http://www.visaforchina.cn. If you’re aged 13 and under or aged 71 and over you can only apply online.
You must provide biometric data (scanned fingerprints) for your application. There are visa application centres in London, Manchester, Belfast and Edinburgh. The details of their opening hours are on their websites. The Chinese Embassy has further information on visa categories and how to apply. The application process takes approximately 4 – 10 working days and the cost depends on the visa and class you choose.
You will require extra documentation for your application that you can request from us from 2 months before departure. They may ask for the Agency Licence Number which is China International Travel Service Ltd: 911100001013930695. We work closely with The Travel Visa Company who will be able to arrange your visa on your behalf. Please call them on 01270 250 590 and quote 'Mercury Holidays'. When calling the Travel Visa Company they will advise you of any changes to the fees or the procedure, they will also advise you of all the information they will require to apply for the visa.
We recommend you check with your destinations' Tourist Board or Embassy prior to departure for the most up to date guidelines regarding these.
You will need to fill in an arrival card online before travel for all travel dates. This can be done on the NIA’s official website https://s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/. To complete the form you will need to have your passport number and visa number. Once the form is complete you will either need to print out the QR code or have the QR code available on your phone.
We strongly recommend that you and all members of your party are suitably insured as soon as you book your holiday. It is a condition of booking that you must have suitable travel insurance. It is important that you purchase travel insurance that suitably covers your participation in whatever activities you may undertake at the time that you make your booking. This tour is accessible to most people with an average level of fitness and normal mobility. It involves moderate days of walking on uneven paths and small hills, and getting on and off coaches and boats. This tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. Should you not be able to physically complete the sightseeing at the tour pace then you may not fully experience the day’s itinerary, or you may need to pay for a private driver and guide.
The currency in China is the Renminbi, known as RMB or CNY. It is often referred to as the Yuan. We recommend that you exchange your currency before you depart. US Dollars are widely accepted in China should you wish to keep an alternative currency on you. Most major credit cards are accepted in hotels and shopping malls in China. Small shops and restaurants may not accept credit cards as well as street vendors, so it's strongly advised to have sufficient Chinese currency with you. ATM’s are readily available in big cities and most small towns.
As normal practice you may be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card, you may be asked for a cash deposit. American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels.
You will need to take some extra money with you to cover any personal purchases, such as souvenirs, laundry, extra drinks, and snacks. Approximately £400 will be sufficient for the duration of the tour.
It is customary to tip your national guide, local guide and driver approximately CNY40 per person per day. Your national guide will collect this for your convenience on the first day of your tour, approximately CNY520 per person for the total duration. Tips are collected in Chinese Yuan.
This is a fully escorted tour, meaning that you will be met on arrival by your national guide who will remain with you for the duration of your trip. You will also be joined by a local guide in each of the cities which you visit, ensuring that you have first-hand knowledge at all times. For groups of less than 10, you will have a driver and be joined by a local guide at each location.
Trains
During this tour, you will travel on China’s high-speed bullet trains. All journeys will be in Economy Class, with comfortable, clean and air-conditioned carriages. Overhead storage is available for smaller bags, and restrooms can be found at the end of each carriage.
Each adult passenger is permitted to take one piece of luggage weighing up to 30 kg. Individual items of luggage carried in the passenger compartment must not exceed 160 cm in total dimensions. Please note that luggage exceeding the permitted allowance may not be accepted on board the train. If your tour includes flights, baggage allowances may differ from the train allowance stated above.
For safety reasons, certain dangerous or hazardous items are prohibited on trains. These include power banks without a 3C certification mark, sharp objects such as penknives and camping utensils, and lighters. Some flammable substances are also restricted. Aerosol spray cans, including hairspray, hair gel, styling mousse, insect repellent and air freshener, must not exceed 120 ml (4.2 fl oz).
Please note: Power banks without a 3C certification mark are also prohibited on flights within China.

Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character, and can range from business hotels to leisure hotels. Hotel accommodation is generally rated as local three to four-star standard, but please note there is no international classification system for hotels, and differences in facilities and quality do exist between the UK and China. All group tours hotels have private bathroom facilities. Rest assured that all accommodation used by Mercury Holidays is regularly inspected by our staff and partners to ensure that standards meet your needs.
Breakfast is always western style and served in the hotel each morning. Dinner (when included) will be taken in local restaurants or at the hotel. A variety of restaurants are visited giving you the chance to experience a range of dishes and flavours. Unlike the western world, Chinese people do not normally pre-heat their plates and food can be presented at a variety of temperatures, which is a typical Chinese way of doing things.

It is not recommended to drink the tap water, even in developed countries water may contain unfamiliar elements that can cause upset stomachs. In less developed countries water is not filtered in the same way, so to ensure your comfort and well-being, one bottle of drinking water will be provided on touring days.
If you are travelling within the below Chinese Public Holidays, please note that celebrations last for several days and during these times some businesses will be closed and coach, air and train travel may be affected. Tourist attractions will be open but may be crowded. Chinese New Year usually falls sometime between January 21 and February 20. Golden Week public holidays fall annually between 1st – 3rd of May and 1st – 7th of October.
On your arrival in Shanghai you will be met by a representative from our local agent will be in the terminal, holding a sign displaying: “Mercury Holidays”. If landing at Terminal 1, Please exit from international arrivals gate 4. After exiting the arrivals gate turn left and walk to the passenger service centre. The Mercury Holidays representative will show you to your transfer vehicle.
