Warning to all travellers: do not book this hotel if you value cleanliness, comfort, and a stress-free holiday. This property is nowhere near the standard advertised and could ruin your vacation.
Our experience at Cocoa Resort and Boutique Hotel was appalling. When we checked in, the bathroom was in a shocking state rust so severe on the taps (at least 3cm thick) that I wouldn’t put even dirty clothes there, let alone myself or my children. We immediately went to reception, and while the staff did their best and moved us to their sister property, Cocoa Boutique, the overall cleanliness was still far below acceptable standards.
We would have booked elsewhere, but there was no availability in any decent resort that night. After reluctantly settling in, we went to the restaurant and ordered a simple burger and chips. It took over an hour to arrive, and when it did, the burger was stale and completely lacking flavour. Having not eaten since morning, this was incredibly frustrating. Honestly, we cannot wait to check out the only thing stopping us is the lack of alternative options tonight.
The staff tried, and I appreciate that, but the hotel itself is in a disgusting state and nowhere near the standard advertised. This stay has completely ruined our vacation. Travellers beware: avoid this property at all costs if you value hygiene, decent food, and peace of mind.
While the front office staff are welcoming, the rest of the team appears extremely demoralized. The food offering is very basic, with little to no variety. There's little or no effort for diversification of meals
The rooms are stale, smelly, and poorly maintained, which completely diminishes the resort experience and falls far below expectations. I have stayed at this hotel five times, and unfortunately, with each visit, the quality of the property continues to decline. When the hotel was under Muthu Hotels, it was noticeably cleaner and better managed.
Staff negligence is also a major concern. During dinner, I observed cockroaches on the serving table. I immediately informed the waiter, cook, and the team on duty, but their response was alarming—they showed no concern and did not even attempt to address the issue. It appeared to be a normal occurrence to them. They litterally laughed amongst themeselves
The hotel has significant potential given its location and setting; however, the current standards of cleanliness, service, and overall management are far below what is expected of a resort and urgently require attention.
Sorry state of affairs, to be honest. The staff are great, and so is the beach, but that is about all that remains of a good standard at the hotel. Everything else is either broken or breaking. I wouldn't recommend eating in the hotel, but given its good location, there are plenty of nice restaurants in the surrounding area, and hotel taxis can be ordered at any time. There is a reason it's so much cheaper than the rest of the resorts in Mombasa.
Whilst the hotel is described as luxurious it falls short on some areas due to lack of maintenance and up keep. In particular around the pool area chunks of concrete are missing on the surround. The sunbed mattresses are worn and stitching coming undone. Also I was not impressed by the catering which was a buffet for every meal. The breakfast buffet was with an omelette bar and also some fresh fruit. But we tried the evening buffet once and were very disappointed. The 'fresh" rolls were stale and the whole experience was underwhelming for 3000 KES per person. The a la care snack menu is better and is available throughout the day. On a brighter note the room was very good. The bed was comfortable and the A/c worked efficiently. The situation of the hotel is ideal facing on to a sandy beach However you either need own transport or to use a tuk tuk to get to a shop
They can certainly do better. While the room was spacious, the overall experience was disappointing. The bathrooms were underwhelming, and despite being in an area known for heavy mosquito presence, the room did not have a mosquito net. I eventually had to wait nearly two hours to be moved to an alternative room, which, unfortunately, had not even been prepared.
The dining experience was equally frustrating. I placed an order, but the staff member who took it never submitted it and ended his shift without informing anyone. As a result, I waited an additional hour for a meal, and only received attention after repeatedly following up. When the food finally arrived, it was not even the correct order.
Overall, the service and attention to detail fell far below expectations. Sadly, based on this experience, I would not consider returning.
