Despite the laid-back ambience of Santa Cruz, those seeking a livelier spot will find Madeira's capital (Funchal), just 15 minutes up the road.
Those wanting an adventure can pick up an easy-going nature trail that will take you across a network of canals, under waterfalls and along mountainous routes edged with laurel trees.
Similar to much of Madeira, Santa Cruz has pebbled beaches with sun loungers and is backed by a pretty palm-shaded promenade with a wealth of wining and dining options.
