Funchal is Madeira's capital and has a natural deep harbour which made it the first place settled on the island. Situated on the south-east coast of Madeira this beautiful town is split into three distinct areas, to the east is the old town of Funchal, located around the marina where there are a choice of many excellent restaurants, the central commercial area, and the Lido located to the west of Funchal where the majority of the hotels are located.

As the capital, Funchal is the largest town on Madeira and is also one of the largest holiday resorts. Popular for its perfect all year climate, visitors on a holiday to Funchal spend there days relaxing at the many lidos or on the nearby pebble beach all of which are at a high standard. Restaurants are located throughout the town and offer a range of cuisines including traditional local dishes.

The town of Funchal dates back several hundred years and a wealth of history and culture can be explored during your holiday. While Funchal is the largest town on the island it is still easy to get around on foot and explore all the sites separated by narrow cobbled streets.
